Sadly, where I live the selection is quite limited especially for the more "exotic" stuff, unless price is no object. I really crave octopus and squid. I got my kids, now adults, addicted to sushi when they were both quite young. My daughter is currently in Okinawa and she's always sending pictures of herself enjoying "real sushi".
I love sushi. Never had it before I moved to Canada as the nearest place was central Manchester 12 miles away but I have easy access to loads of it now. I can never remember what I order but that's not a problem as I'd neck all of it. Mix it with a bit of tempura veggies and the spicy salad effort they often offer. Trez delish.
Sushi restaurants abound here in San Diego. My wife turned me on to it years ago, but our daughter hasn't made the leap yet (she usually orders chicken katsu). Crunchy rolls rule, but I've recently become more adventurous, trying more exotic varieties. I also tried sashimi (ahi tuna variety) for the first time recently, and it was delicious. No "fishy" taste at all (obviously not a salmon fan).
One of my favorite things about sushi is all the crazy fun varieties they come up with, like this "caterpillar roll":
Ah, I don't remember what it's called. For me it's only "sushi".
It's cool. I'm not a sushi snob, but I have come up against sushi snobbery from time to time. I say that to preface that some consider only Nigiri and Sashimi to be "sushi". Makizushi would be sushi rolls, etc. My personal preference is for nigiri or sashimi, although I do like the very basic rolls such as tuna or salmon with only the fish and rice wrapped in nori. The more stuff is added to the rolls the less I can taste the fish so for me it defeats the purpose. Anyone here with a "bizarre" sushi favorite? I've always wanted to try Fugu but haven't had the opportunity yet.
Back in my meat-eating days, I dug sushi rolls. I would get tuna roll, salmon roll, maybe spicy crab. I wasn't big on any of the "special" rolls with a bunch of crap in them.
Now when we go out for it, I'll get vegetable rolls and it's not quite as interesting to me. I'd rather just go somewhere and get a big salad instead.
