Another passing. 57 years old, too young.

I believe that I've seen only one of Dan Ireland's films.

Ireland was one of the executive producers on the 1988 thriller MIDNIGHT CROSSING. Roger Holzberg directed the film. The unreleased score was by Steve Tyrell.

Ireland was one of the executive producers for the comedy horror film WAXWORK. He also had a small role as a zombie in the film, as did his secretary Karen Schaffer. Anthony Hickox directed the 1988 film. Roger Bellon's score has been made available as a download.

Ireland was an executive producer on TWISTER. But this was not the famous 1996 disaster film, but instead was a 1989 offbeat comedy starring Harry Dean Stanton and Crispin Glover. Michael Almereyda directed the film, which has an unreleased score by Hans Zimmer. I saw this film on video about 15 years ago.

Ireland was the co-producer on Ken Russell's 1991 drama WHORE, which the director said he made in response to PRETTY WOMAN (1990). The unreleased score was by Michael Gibbs

Sad. Must confess I haven't seen his films, but I enjoyed his video reviews over at Trailers From Hell. That's how I know him really.

Dan Ireland made his directorial debut with the 1996 film THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. The true story was set in Texas in the 1930s, where young schoolteacher Novalyne Price (Renée Zellweger) meets a handsome, eccentric, interesting young man named Robert Howard (Vincent D'Onofrio). He's a successful writer--of the pulp stories of "Conan the Barbarian"; she's an aspiring one. A friendship develops into a sort of courtship. For his directing, Ireland was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and won the American Independent Special Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival. The score by Harry Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer was released on CD by Mojo Trax.

Ireland directed 2005's MRS. PALFREY AT THE CLAREMONT. In the film, an elderly woman (Joan Plowright), all but abandoned by her family in a London retirement hotel, strikes up a curious friendship with a young writer (Rupert Friend). The film won Audience Awards for Best Film at both the Newport Beach and Palm Springs International Film Festivals. Stephen Barton's score was released by Movie Score Media.

RIP.

Ireland used Harry Gregson-Williams on three films, The Whole Wide World (feat. Zimmer), Passionada and Jolene. I guess Ireland knew Zimmer through 1989's Twister.
