I thought it might be fun (or not) to make a list of adjectives and nouns that actors should possess in order to play James Bond. It looks like we will be getting a new one. I have read a few of the books, and I’ve watched all the Bond movies (good and bad) and have decided that actors should possess certain characteristics in order to play Bond.

First I will start with a noun: male. I’ve actually read lists of suggestions for a new Bond that have women listed. Nope. Bond is male. Would we cast a woman as Tarzan? Would we cast a man to play Madam Curie? Hope not.

Handsome. Bond seems to easily attract women, so being homely isn’t going to work. He should have a kind of rugged “handsomeness” not a feminine type of good looks.

Physicality. Bond fights and fights well, so he should have a certain physical size to outwit those nasty assassins.

British or United Kingdom: I realize that actors can adopt a British accent, but I like the idea of keeping him embedded in the UK gene pool.

Suave, sophisticated and intelligent. He should at least appear to have those traits.

An expert in the delivery of double entendres as well as being rather witty.

Emotionally cold and calculating at times as he can be a killer, and yet sensitive in some cases if he falls in love.

Should he be a Thespian? Now there’s the rub. Does the part of Bond call for the thespian abilities of say a Laurence Olivier? I haven’t seen that need yet in Bond roles; and yet acting like a mannequin doesn’t really endear him to audiences, so what acting chops are needed? How much depth in acting is necessary?

Your list?

P.S. Have fun and try not to infect this topic with “grumpyitus.”

He just needs to look good in a tux and be able to state his name legibly with a cigarette stuck to his lips.

Hello Billy. Sometimes posters ask for input without giving their own. I gave my list. Now you can add to it or capitalize on some of my listed traits. You can agree with my adjectives and extend them, or you can do the really "stewpid" thing and disagree with me which is the kiss of death. wink

Just join in the fun.

Looking good in a tux, Grecchus? Of course.

I find myself in the BillCarson column, Joan.
I think you've already said it all so eloquently and completely that I'm at a loss to contribute anything more.
Except...

Bond must have a fabulous physician. Perhaps an entire team of them.
I'm not going to try to count all of the gorgeous ladies he's bedded since his first appearance in 1963, but somehow he has managed to be STD free all this time!

Ahhhh…the movies.

At the risk of having "grumpyitus", the only adjectives I can come up with relate exclusively to the latest 007 incumbent and these would be:

Vapid

Torpid

Dismal

Mike, why not just list traits YOU WANT Bond to have in the future? Might be interesting.

Chris, Bond must not have STD's. I agree.

Bill, what is a "scoobie?" Speak English please. smile

People can always chime in on whether or not Bond should be a deep, layered actor. I like Sean Connery, but I never saw an Oscar for him until he left the Bond role and did a fine job in The Untouchables.

Here's one: ingenuity.

That's also, I'd contend, the best noun to describe the theme song. When we hear that da--da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da . . . , we know: 007 has an idea!

Edwz, Mike won't agree with us, but I too found Daniel Craig "hot."

Pretty good, Chris, except it is Danielcraigesque, not Michael.

I like Cmdr. Bond's adjective: ingenuity. Absolutely.

Deviousness.
He has to be able to either kill or caress at a moment's notice and never reveal in his eyes which of the two he's about to do.
