At the 56th Annual Academy Awards.

Cool to see Quincy conducting Conti's RIGHT STUFF and Goldsmith's UNDER FIRE and the others.

I remember being so upset that UNDER FIRE lost to THE RIGHT STUFF.

Enjoy!

While I actually like Conti's THE RIGHT STUFF, I have to shake my head over the "best original score" award going to the film still containing a number of the director's temp cues--the Mancini from WHITE DAWN, Holst's "Mars" from THE PLANETS, etc.

UNDER FIRE was another case of Goldsmith being robbed. And, for a film where his score was actually singled out for praise by Pauline Kael, of all people. It's only marginally less irritating than STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE losing to A LITTLE ROMANCE.

However, we ARE talking about the Academy Awards whose music branch has always been out in the weeds

I have that segment on videotape, somewhere in the loft.
I (mis)remembered it as Bill Conti conducting the whole thing.
I love all the themes in the medley and very much regret not picking up CROSS CREEK from Intrada when it was released. It's the only hole in my collection of that segment frown

At about 1:55, during the red carpet material, an African American gentleman is mistakenly identified by the announcer as Quincy Jones. Anyone know who that guy really was?

Dang, Michael Caine looked more like Quincy than that guy. Hate it when researchers at these things are inept. Someone had to tell the announcer that was Quincy unless the Voice of the Academy blew it himself.
