FRIDAY, APRIL 29

BRAINDEAD---CBS released a trailer for the sci fi sitcom about aliens eating the brains of Congress and its staffers. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Tony Shalhoub star.

Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH4e4xHkW5E

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY---Mads Mikkelsen said about his co-starring role with Felicity Jones, “Felicity plays a young, strong woman. And I play her father." He then added, "And that was too much, I'm sorry."

STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII---director Rian Johnson stated filming is half-finished and released two set photos.

THE CATCHER WAS A SPY---Paul Rudd (ANT-MAN) stars in this World War II movie based on the biography of pro baseball player Moe Berg who was also a spy for the OSS. The script is by Robert Rodat (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN).

OMERTA---Sylvester Stallone is in negotiations to star in this tv series based on Mario Puzo's third novel of his mafia trilogy. Stallone is expected to play the mafia head.

TOMB RAIDER---Alicia Vikander (EX MACHINA) will play Lara Croft in the Warner Bros. reboot movie.

REAGAN---President Ronald Reagan's son, Michael, commented on the Will Ferrell comedy movie in which an intern must convince President Reagan, suffering from dementia, that he's an actor playing the President in a movie, "What an [outrage]. Alzheimer's is not a joke. It kills. You should be ashamed, all of you." He added later, "Alzheimer's is not a comedy!"
Reagan's daughter, Patti Davis, added, "Perhaps you have managed to retain some ignorance about Alzheimer's and other versions of dementia. Perhaps if you knew more, you would not find the subject humorous. Alzheimer's doesn't care if you are President of the United States or a dockworker. It steals what is most precious to a human being - memories, connections, the familiar landmarks of a lifetime that we all come to rely on to hold our place secure in this world and keep us linked to those we have come to know and love."

THE FIRST OMEN---20th Century Fox prequel movie underway to its 1976 horror movie that starred Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.

THE GENERAL---Martin Scorsese is in talks to direct this biomovie about General George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

MILES---sci fi movie underway based on the short film about an 18 year-old boy who befriends a military robot prototype that escaped from its laboratory.

TOMB RAIDER---Alicia Vikander (EX MACHINA) will play Lara Croft in the Warner Bros. reboot movie.

Directed by our own Roar Uthaug (who did the great disaster film THE WAVE last year). A truly Scandinavian production, this.

I don't want to comment on any political aspects of this, but dementia CAN have a humourous aspect. I know, because I've dealt with it more or less directly. Of course, it's tinged with sadness, but some of the absurd situations that arise now and then, you can't help but smile at. But of course, it's always a smile well aware of what's really happening.

I'm curious to see how they're going to twist this; if it is -- at all -- possible to make it funny without being tasteless.

THE FIRST OMEN---20th Century Fox prequel movie underway to its 1976 horror movie that starred Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.

This is a great idea, actually (if it's in the right hands). Lots of story potential before the events of THE OMEN.

That's okay, Mads, it's not much of a ball crusher. I'm sure you'll understand.

And Will Ferrell has now backed out of the REAGAN comedy:

Good for him.

But I must admit I was curious to see how they would solve this. Is the project now dead or are they going ahead with another actor/producer instead? Time will show.

Another good reason to absolutely DESPISE WILL FERRELL.... I can not STAND him, and don't think he's the least bit funny.

THE FIRST OMEN---20th Century Fox prequel movie underway to its 1976 horror movie that starred Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.

Seriously? The remake wasn't bad enough? I only saw bits of it on TV, but it was awful. This doesn't seem like an improvement.

Prequels are almost invariably a bad idea. They nearly always screw up continuity, or the timeline, or some nagging detail.

You also don't have to go around explaining everything to everyone. There are some tantalizing hints as to what happened before the first film began, but I enjoyed pondering their implications. That's what's great about storytelling. If done right, the plot can take on a life of its own within the mind of the audience. Not anymore! If anything about events prior to the beginning of the story is hinted at, that's an opportunity to make a prequel!

This will just spell it out for us, and not as the original filmmakers intended, shattering our individual theories in the process.

Yet another Hollywood cash grab I'll be sure to miss.

But at least it reminded me to get The Omen on Blu-ray.

I get the feeling that the whole thing was just a wind-up and that no such movie was ever planned.
The media is well-deserving of healthy scepticism.

Having said that, I think it would have been very clever if it had ended up as merely a unique ploy to get people talking about dementia--giving it some extra attention, so to speak.
True or not, it filled that role quite effectively.

Well, something starts to make sense. THE OMEN will be Fox Home Video's first library title released as a UHD 4K Blu-ray, and everyone's been wonder "Why THE OMEN of all the classic Fox titles?" Now, I see why.

Re the Reagan film, I think there's a missed opportunity to make a decent film about the Alzheimers/dementia subject, from a serious perspective, maybe with moments of touching humour (rather than comedy). And I think Will Ferrell could have pulled off a serious performance. God, thinking about it, he might even be good enough to get an Oscar nomination for a role like that! eek

That might have been the plan all along, and that could have some merit. Though I understand the family taking offense. If you want to make a comedy about dementia, fine, comedy is subjective. But if you want to make a comedy about a real person with dementia who has surviving family members, then that's questionable. Especially if you didn't approach the family first and get their approval. Not that you have too by law, but it's otherwise incentive and crass.
