Quaker Brown Sugar and Maple individual pack Oatmeal that a friend of mine gave me several years ago. Printed on the box it reads "best before September 2011".... would you eat it? Or, more to the point, would it be safe for ME to eat it? This box with the packets has been in my kitchen cabinet for about 5 years or so.

I'd toss it. Why take that chance? Nobody likes to waste food, but almost 5 years past the expiration date??? I'd say you can live without it....
Hold one of the packets over a bright light bulb or flashlight. If the shadow cast by the arrangement of oats within resembles either Soupy Sales or Paul Lynde, it's still safe to eat. If not, toss it.

Cut open your pillow and sprinkle the oats inside. Sew it back up. No more nachtmares.
