Due to lack of interest in the umpteenth Marvel Big screen bowel movement, we decided to go and see Louis Theroux's Scientology documentary movie at the theatre, his first for the big screen. Loved some of his earlier TV-work where he went through the US, thought his recent material was rather lacking but we were still wanting to give this a go. The movie was typical Theroux, very on the surface and more involved with the motivations and drive of the subjects, exposing them through turning the table on them and confronting them with their own choices. So I didn't really learn that much about Scientology that I didn't already know to some extent, and while entertaining, I didn't really feel the need for this to be a film as opposed to just another TV episode. What was great because of it being a film, was the score. With most of the movie (if not all of it) taking place in L.A., the documentary was scored very broad with a traditional Hollywood sound, but also very intense in regards to the 'sect' and interrogation aspects. It was the one element that I enjoyed although I'm usually not a fan of this type of blatant film scoring in documentaries. But somehow with Theroux's dry whit and humour it managed to resonate. I can't recommend people to see this in the theatre, but do check it out for the score and I wouldn't mind this to have a release! Any other scores by Dan Jones that are worth checking out?

The only other score of his that I am familiar with was his music for Shadow of the Vampire, which I thought was quite effective in the film (if not particularly memorable at first blush), but I never picked up the record album because I heard it has a lot of dialogue on it.

Dan Jones contributed a very eerie and effective score to the BBC adaptation of James Herbert's The Secret of Crickley Hall a couple of years ago. SG
