Well I bet in most cases it's going to be "older" actors, who's personal lives were more private. We just didn't have the smut on them. Today actors more freely express themselves, which usually makes ppl picks sides regarding likeability.
My suggestions:
Marilyn Monroe Dick VanDyke Harrison Ford (Always business like and keeps a private life)
Dont be silly, jim Universally-liked? On this forum???!!? No way. We cant agree on even classic scores and films let alone actors. There will always be someone who cant stand this actor or that actor. Good luck with that!

I'm just trying to bring all FSMers together, Bill.
(and as few replies there are on the Shirley Temple thread, one can safely guess that it ain't her).
Glad to see Paul Newman, and I would add Steve McQueen for transcending generations.
Laurence Olivier went from leading man in Wuthering Heights to an amazing villain in The Marathon Man. He certainly covered many generations.
I would also add James Garner and Meryl Streep.
(Bill is in a way kind of correct about it being difficult to have universal agreement. I can't watch a movie featuring Marilyn Monroe, but to each his/her own.)
Rudd was honestly the first actor I thought of when I read the thread title. Aside from This Is 40, I can't think of an unlikable performance by him.
Unfortunately, Paul Rudd is not universally liked. Tony Kornheiser, my favorite sports radio host notwithstanding, is at least one person who doesn't appreciate Rudd.
I don't understand it. How can anybody not like Paul Rudd?! He's a Steelers fan, for goodness' sake!
