TUESDAY, MAY 24

HALLOWEEN---the latest sequel to the classic 1978 horror movie is underway with John Carpenter returning as executive producer, ā€œ38 years after the original Halloween, Iā€™m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all.ā€ Carpenter is in negotiations to compose the sequel's score.

STAR TREK BEYOND---new poster released for the sequel.

AUSTIN POWERS---director Jay Roach commented on a possible fourth movie, "You know, Mike Myers and I talk about it every time we get together. I would say it's in a latent phase right now, but someday if we find the right idea that seems to have it earn itself, for sure. Mike gave me the break of a lifetime in letting me direct [AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY] so I'm always good to go."

JAMES BOND---Priyanka Chopra (QUANTICO) commented on a fan poll which wanted her to be the next Bond Girl, "F**k that - I wanna be Bond." She added, "I don't think Bond does too much, he's just suave and sexy. He rolls out with his martini and fancy cars. Wow, it sounds like my life already."

BLACK PANTHER---casting call for the superhero movie include Monica Lynne, N'Gassi, Okoye, Queen Divine Justice, W'Kabi, Zuri, Archebe, Erik Killmonger, Malice, Man-Ape and White Wolf.

GOTHAM---executive producer John Stevens announced Season 3's villains, "We'll be seeing Mad Hatter in Season 3. We'll be seeing the Tweedle Brothers, too, if we're going to bring the Hatter in. In line with the Court of Owls, we'll be seeing Talon. And, we should be seeing Solomon Grundy."

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?---remake underway of the 1972 movie about a gym teacher at an all-girls school who is suspected of being a serial killer. He seeks to find the real killer. Nicolas Winding Refn is the producer. Refin is also developing horror remakes of MANIAC COP and WITCHFINDER GENERAL.

JOSS WHEDON---Whedon commented on his next movie, "It is a story about a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh-t. And that much is all I can say. It is an original screenplay that is very different from everything I've ever done except for that it's exactly the same. It's the first time in my life I'm writing without a sort of studio audience rating - without a plan...But I think it will be good!"

GARFIELD--new CG-animated movie underway based on the comic strip cat.

JOHN BELUSHI---untitled Showtime documentary underway with Belushi's wife, Judith Belushi Pisano, agreeing to help for the first time in the production.

I rather like the Star Trek Beyond posters, especially the one that emulates Star Trek The Motion Picture.
If they only hired a real poster art painter.

That's a nice send-up.

As the previews sure make it look like the "J.J.-prise" takes it on the chin in this installment, maybe something more akin to the refit Enterprise will make an appearance by film's end.

Along with the Goldsmith score, the Probert-designed vessel was the best thing about The Motion Picture. (I don't mean that as an insult to the movie, which I actually quite enjoy. "Fantasia for Jerry Goldsmith fans," I've heard it called. Sounds accurate to me--and glorious.)

Unless your Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. Cloth-eared oaf.

Fully agree with Priyanka Chopra's stance on Bond. Who wants to play second fiddle to him?

Yes, I do not like the idea of no Enterprise - but then again Star Trek The Voyage Home was almost entirely without an Enterprise, and it is one of the better movies. But anyway, yes I love TMP and all those designs, they hold up quite well. and I have not heard the term Fantasia for Goldsmith, but I like it.

He's got two doctorates. What have you got?

I clicked on the Star Trek trailer link (here or somewhere else) thinking it was for the new series. The JJ movies do nothing for me... I think the participants give a good showing - especially Karl Urban - but the overall substance remains flimsy for me. There`s no real dramatic meat on any convincing bones, unlike the original series.

At its best, the original series could have the worst effects in the universe, yet still be engaging because of the moral challenges. They could have worked as radio plays when the true philosophical battles took place. The new Trek films seem two-dimensional... generic action flicks clothed in the updated cosmetic garb of Star Trek.

I remain interested in seeing (seeing...) a trailer for the new series.

I think I coined that phrase.

Gold(smith) star for you--great job, and great phrase.

I looked up that Big Bang Theory clip on YouTube. It was gratifying to see many comments in support of Goldsmith (specifically by name even). Judging from Sheldon's criticism, the BBT universe seems like faux-nerdom and therefore a(nother) trivialization rather than any glorification. I knew there was a reason I never watched the show.

You hit the nail on the head, with faux-nerdom. BBT gets it all wrong. It's really sad how popular it is even with famous "nerds". (or maybe their just jumping on the success bandwagon)

You're right. I envy that fictional character his fictional doctorates.

I think we've got a more legitimate gripe against the writers of that show. How many doctorates among them, again?

This Wednesday (July 20th), you can catch all three of the recent STAR TREK films for one low price ($29.99) if you have a participating theater near you.

Is a Hollywood writer referred to as a "script doctor" considered to have a degree?

I think the only real similarity to a medical professional there is the pay scale.

I thought you were asking if the film writers had any doctorates (like a PhD in English). A "script doctor" is a film writer (who fixes or improves scripts), not a medical character in a script.

Only if Dr. Pepper has a degree.

Well, you should get right on writing your own spy story with exciting villains and high adventu... oh, that takes actual work, creativity, and time.

OK then, just stand there and smile pretty for when camera go click.
