In the two-part television movie ARABIAN NIGHTS, which aired on ABC in 2000, Burt Kwouk played "Caliph Beder." The film was directed by Steve Barron. Varese Sarabande released Richard Harvey's score.
In the 2001 Jet Li action film KISS OF THE DRAGON, Burt Kwouk played an old Chinese shopkeeper named "Uncle Tai." The film was directed by Chris Nahon. Craig Armstrong reworked his score from the film into a symphony (albeit one with 19 tracks) called "Symphony for Isabelle," which was released in Europe on the Europa label.
In 2003's BEYOND BORDERS, Angelina Jolie stars as an American living in London who encounters a renegade doctor (Clive Owen) who convinces her to support his relief efforts in war-torn Africa. Burt Kwouk had a small role as "Colonel Gao." Martin Campbell directed the film. James Horner's score was released by Varese Sarabande.
After his wife is brutally murdered, an ex-cop (Jean-Claude Van Damme) wages war against the Chinese triads in the 2004 action film WAKE OF DEATH. Burt Kwouk played "Tommy Li." It was Kwouk's last feature film, but it was released directly to video in most of the world. Philippe Martinez directed, and Caldera Records released Guy Farley's score.
He also acted in the BBC TV series 'Tenko' about women POWs in WWII, as a Japanese Officer, and carried it off brilliantly. It's actually a big leap for a Chinese actor to manifest convincingly as Japanese, perfect accent 'n all, so he was actually extremely talented, not the mere racial stereotype the public often saw him as.
