This was brought up in another Horner thread, but I thought this deserved a thread of its own.

This is a must listen!

This is a program that I was more than honoured to be apart of. Jason Drury has put together a superb tribute to the late James Horner with part one of his in-depth look at the life and career of one of Hollywood's greatest film composers. The show is superbly written, researched and hosted, professionally produced and chock-full of interesting tales from fans, friends, and film music journalists who offer fascinating insight into the life of this extraordinary and controversial artist. Enjoy!

Listened this morning, and it reminded me of a rant I've been stowing for some time. At an hour and twenty-three minutes it suffers from this padding phenomenon where film music writers, bloggers and podcasters feel it's necessary to list the supporting cast and plots from films like KRULL, designations (ALIEN, we're told is the "Ridley Scott-directed 1979 sci-fi horror classic" — thank you, haven't heard of it) and details that are essentially irrelevant to the discussion of Horner's early work. This isn't a critique of the insight provided by the guests, but the script.

This rant written on a Mac, Produced by Steven Spielberg, Directed by Don Bluth and starring a young Liam Neeson.

God forbid they try to add some context to make it appeal to anyone other than us film score weirdos.

Sorry, I thought this was an in-depth look at the life and music of James Horner, not a re-telling of the pre-show slides at AMC.

That's exactly what the show is. You can't have an in-depth look at the life and music of James Horner without putting his music in context, which includes the type of films he worked on, when he worked on them, the people he worked with, etc.

It's still padding. Can you imagine how boring Jeff Bond's Danny Elfman book would be if instead of actually interesting insight he took time to mention that Chris Brigham co-produced EXTREME MEASURES or that MARS ATTACKS! starred Ray J as one of Pam Grier's sons? That's context, or filler?

Can you give me example of where the show did that? I mean, did he mention the name of the second violin player on Wolfen... or the guy who flipped the pages for the piano player in Field of Dreams... or who delivered lunch on the third day of the recording sessions for Aliens?

I can't recall if anything that insignificant was mentioned on the show or not?
