I keep getting a pop up box that says members area and it wants me to sign in with a username and password. The website is for some streaming movie site but it's originating from FSM. I'm able to hit cancel, but it continually pops up again.

Sounds more like your browser or pc is infected with malware. Best to have a anti-virus/malware program sweep it clean.

Not every program will detect everything and not every program will necessarily remove everything (many will re-install themselves), which can require the help of a professional (some in locally, or a professional that offers free time at the bleepingcomputer forums).

On average just to make sure, I'lll run three or so programs, more if I think something is wrong. Including:

RKill (rootkit killer)
bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/

TDSSKiller
bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/dl/4/

Malwarebytes (one of the best free programs available)
bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/dl/7/

Normally I might also suggest ADWCleaner, but it won't download from there; cnet is no good, it just links back to the creator's website and it won't download from there either.

Remember, after installing a program, to run them in Safe Mode, to limit access maleware can have and prevent them from getting online and re-infecting the computer.

Then in regular mode, pull out the big gun and use the ESET free online scanner; this can take over an hour or under two hours depeding on how much it has to search. Disable Sleep so it is not interrupted.

By the way, not all anti-virus and maleware programs are the same, some are designed to fool people and actually contain malicious code in them.

When done, personally I prefer to optimize and I run TFC (Temp File Cleaner; also at bleepingcomputer), then the Windows program Disk Cleanup (select what boxes you want to), and then finally when it's all done, Defrag.

You may have to use a Restore Point.

I started getting that pop up last night as well.... the name was something like "volotov.com"... should I just ignored it?

Yep, that's what I'm getting too. Seems to be only on this site.

@ Justin Boggan- Thxs for all the additional information. It doesn't hurt to double and triple check.

Yeah.... it's not coming up on any other website I visit, so I'm assuming the problem is on FSM's end? Rather, I HOPE it's on their end!

Also yesterday I noticed an ad banner in the masthead that seemed kinda strange. It appeared to be for a foreign site. (don't remember if it was even in English) I didn't click on it though.

Hasn't happened to me..... yet!

A quick search shows volotov.com apparently used to be a site for pay to watch obscure indenpendant films and other things. A search of the site using Google, apparently indicates it currently has no pages. I wouldn't visit the site -- it's probably infected with malicious code waiting to make your computer it's new home.

Adding more information. It seems the pop up box appears only when you are not logged into FSM. Once I'm logged in properly the pop up doesn't seem to appear.

All, we've not been hacked. The Hiccups thread contained a post from Francis that linked to a pic at the site mentioned above. That site has password protected linked pics apparently. I deleted the link, so the authentication pop-up should be gone.

Feel free to test/verify and confirm that the issue is resolved.

LOL. Sorry if my hiccups thread caused some board hiccups.

That's the strangest thing I ever heard. But glad it was something simple, and neither FSM or our computers were compromised.

You know, stuff like this could be avoided if the Community Rules asked people not to hot link. Linking an image you are not hosting (you being any member here) yourself at some site (like Photobucket, etc.), is using the bandwidth of the website that is hosting it, AKA: hot linking.

Hey Justin, as a thoroughly insecure non-techno maroon I just wanted re-confirmation that these three programs are reliable as I want to run them. Am getting suspicious of "ghost shadows" lately on my screen.
