To my ears 90% of all music for movie trailers sounds the same. God forbid there should be some creativity in this field. Why does a top director like Spielberg, who has shown a great love and knowledge of great scores of the past, allow his trailers to have this cookie cutter crap? I'm aware of the fact that trailers are put together before any of the final score is ready, but still.......Maybe the studio(s) themselves have final say on this aspect of the process? I remember when Stepmom came out. The trailer and the music accompanying it gave the strong impression that this was going to be just another stupid comedy. But lo and behold, the movie itself was a solid touching drama aided tremendously by a very touching score by Willams. But that's just one example. There are too many more to mention from lots of other directors. I only mentioned Speilberg because he's one of the very few whom I think would have control over this part of the process. I don't get it........

You could ask a related question of why the trailers themselves are not very good these days. So many times I get an indication from the trailer that is contrary to what the final film is. They tend to want to play up certain things that are ultimately not what draw me into the film leaving me to read reviews to determine if I want to bother to see the movie.

It's funny this came up now because I just watched ZOOTOPIA over the weekend and the trailers sold a completely different kind of movie about a plucky bunny making her way in a world run by animals, when really it's a Shane Black buddy detective/James Ellroy urban corruption noir for kids. I mean, it's fantastic, but if I'd known what it was really about I might have made an effort to watch it even if I didn't have kids.

Now that's what I'm talking about...Star Trek - The Musical! Yikes! Call me Mr.Square, but I can't for the life of me understand this obsession with songs in a drama. Be it film or television. I know, I know, the almighty $. Television may be even worse. You're watching a drama on T.V. and they have a song playing along with the dialog. And it ain't source music, it's just there competing with the dialog. It's a new world and I don't fit in!

I just watched the newest Star Trek trailer and also really disliked the song used. It just detracted me from the trailer. When Ridley Scott's trailer for Gladiator was released, it used Poledouris' Conan music, and it synched perfectly with the visuals. We need more music like that trailer to use. In the latest Star Trek movie, main themes from the two previous Star Trek movies would have been great for aural recall.

I suppose this is no longer 'recent,' but one of my favorites is the TRON: LEGACY trailer that *gasp* actually uses music from the film by Daft Punk!

My question is, why does it have to be good? What's important to me is the score for the actual movie, not the trailer used to market it.

Why not try to give the possible movie goer a truer sense of what the upcomng movie will be like?

Um, but i DO know what you mean. The wife watches that horrid Gray's Anatomy, which just slathers awful awful songs all over the soundtrack...not just during emotional moments, but... damn near all the time. And it's these terrible indie acoustic versions of other people's songs. Just one more reason why that show is the Devil's work big grin

And songs just jammed into trailers is annoying as f*ck. NO thought about really creating a mood. Hell, needle dropping in trailers was fine. Roxy Loses from Basic Instinct worked great in a few, and the Judge Dredd trailer score was great in Lost In Space.

The Rhianna thing, well, shit, marketing, promotion, whatever. It sucks but it doesn't bother most people.

And as said above, as long as the movie and the score are fine, it's all good.

While the trailer doesn't make or break the movie, I certainly would like it if more trailers were scored by the film's composer. Star Trek VI is the best example I can think of.

If a good film score can truly engage us into the emotionality of the movie, I see no problem with trailer music engaging us in the same manner. It would certainly be a big lure for me to go actually see the movie after watching the trailer. Bait me or lure me into paying to see the movie by showing an engaging pictorial trailer enhanced with really good film music.

F***ing right.

1. Don`t feature every bloody scene from the bloody movie. I want some bloody surprises left (!) in the bloody movie when I bloody go see it.

2. Don`t run too long. Run for maybe 2 minutes max. Enough time to entice me, to interest me, not to tell a short story... thats what a movie ticket purchase is for.

3. Trust your composer. Let him or her score everything associated with the film. And get a good composer.

4. Don`t try so hard to interest us. If by featuring 2 or 3 key scenes you cannot catch our interest, perhaps your film is ultimately uninteresting.

With that kind of music I can only suspect the crew of the enterprise will get neutered by an alien race in their next adventure.

This! Star Trek: Beyond makes me think I just saw the whole movie. I remember when the trailer for Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan came out. Looked cool, but they honestly kept the best "money shots" for the film. Thankfully, because experiencing them in the theater for the first time was thrilling.

To my ears 90% of all music for movie trailers sounds the same. God forbid there should be some creativity in this field.

For a long time they were using that Inception sound for everything (thank you Hans Zimmer roll eyes ), now it's a sad piano cover of either the main theme or an old song.

I can total recall the lovely 'DRAGONHEART' theme being used in some or most trailers back when!

Thru the 90's on we got "trailer music" from groups like Two Steps From Hell". I actually thought the music was pretty cool in the beginning, but the sameness quickly sank in.

Jurassic Park using Zimmers Backdraft
Braveheart using Morricones The Mission
Maximum Overdrive using Carpenters Halloween 3
or all those that used Horners Aliens och John Murphys Sunshine in them *LOL*
