Carl Davis – “The Understudy,” “Scandal” Heather McIntosh – “Z for Zachariah,” “Honeymoon” Antonio Pinto – “Amy,” “Senna” Shigeru Umebayashi – “The Grandmaster,” “2046” Marcelo Zarvos – “Rock the Kasbah,” “The Beaver” There are only a few individuals on this list whose musical judgments I'd trust, namely Carl Davis with Zarvos & Umebayashi (and maybe Pinto or McIntosh). However, regarding ... Mary J. Blige ... I ask myself "Can this person truly assess the musical values of film music scores written by classically-trained composers?"

When I read the Mary J. Blige comment, it occurred to me to respond with a question of my own, to wit: Why not? Haven't those classically trained composers in the Music Branch always been tasked with assessing the film values of the nominees in the Best Song category?
