Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “Under Suspicion” from 1991, directed by Simon Moore and starring Liam Neeson, Laura San Giacomo and Kenneth Cranham. Neeson plays a former cop who now works as a private investigator whose main job it is to collect evidence of adultery for his clients who wish to settle divorce cases. Neeson’s character runs into trouble soon though when he orders his wife to go to a hotel room with a well known painter in order to take photographs of the two and sell them to the wife of the painter. Things get nasty when the pair is shot death – and one of the prime suspects is: the investigator himself. Christopher Gunning delivered one of his darkest, most brooding scores which at times evokes the spirit of Bernard Herrmann’s well known and much celebrated style to underscore suspense and enhance the already dangerous situations in the film’s scenes. Gunning wrote several themes and motifs, notably a love theme for Neeson’s and Giacomo’s characters which receives its variations throughout the whole score. The highlight of the score is undoubtedly the famous hanging sequence for which the composer wrote a 7 minute piece which builds steadily until it collapses at its climax and makes your adrenalin rush through your body. Deservedly, Gunning won an Ivor Novello Award for his work on “Under Suspicion” in 1991. This is the third entry of a Gunning score in the Caldera catalog. As a bonus, we included an exclusive audio commentary by the composer where he talks about his work. The 15th CD release of Caldera Records features a detailed booklet text by Gergely Hubai and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg.

I have fond memories of the movie, a beautifully shot and acted neo-noir.,

it's interesting..Gunning is really a class act, his score are old-fashioned in the best sense: rich in melody, refined in compositional technique and orchestration, never banal of boring.
And yet I have not been able to warm to his concert works, I tried with a couple of the symphonies and I just can't get a hold on it..frustrating.

Gunning's red scarf music is in his own world but this score is excellent. A real precursor to what Goldsmith did with Basic Instinct in terms of icy orchestration.

A score I will actually have to buy. I recommend anyone to try this out as it is really world class music, not too dissimilar to what Doyle composed at the time.

By the way, the sound clip only presents a tiny fraction of what this score has to offer. The isham like stop-start scoring is very untypical for this score

I hope you all bought this gem of a score.

So far, UNDER SUSPICION has gathered numerous terrific reviews:

"A romantic thriller score of great class. The passion of the main theme which recalls John Barry goes hand in hand with a morbid suspense that is reminiscent of Kilar or Goldsmith. The mix of orchestra and synthesizers is masterfully done. Brilliant!" - Underscores.fr

"It’s a classy thriller score with a melancholy main theme (predominantly performed by strings and winds) and some raw action material inspired by Polish avant-garde composers. There is wonderful writing and orchestrating on display here." - Synchrotones.com

"A powerful soundtrack with a bright main theme that blends mystery drama and sensuality in the best tradition of black cinema. This main theme is developed with variations and transformations, changing the balance of its three main components, depending on the circumstances, and being supported by subtopics to emphasize the environment of mystery and danger. Gunning also highlights the bleak tone, at times fatalistic, included in both the main subject and at other times, and his beautiful final resolution. A work that is also very elegant." - MundoBSO

However, SoundtrackGeek warns you, saying that the CD is probably not worth buying. It is not great. Not by any means:
"It is without a single cue that I truly love though which is troubling. To use a cliche, it’s a hard pill to swallow because of it’s nature. Only the murder cues were truly harsh and violent, but the rest seems to be more classic thriller scoring but without anything truly great to hold on to. It’s an interesting score for sure, but I wouldn’t call it beautiful. Far from it. It has it’s uses, but right now it’s not for me."

So you decide.

The Score is wonderful!! I really like the fact that CALDERA has the composer speaking about the score on the last track. Gunning is delicious in the way he talks about this music. Love it! More CALDERA releases!!!

Will this CD be available at the upcoming gathering in London?

Yes, it will be. Tim Smith, who is organising the event, is going to raffle the tickets.
We sponsor three CDs of each Gunning release (3x Pollyanna, 3x Rebecca, 3x Under Suspicion) and if you are lucky you can win a copy of a Gunning CD.

I will be at the event myself. I can sign as well. I sign everything.

Debating getting this. I love the end title on Gunning's old promo. I imagine this score overall though is not in league with REBECCA, FIRELIGHT of WHEN THE WHALES CAME.

Well, I don't think you can really compare SUSPICION with these because they are totally, totally different. As to whether they are better is up to you to decide eventually.

Have a listen to a five min audioclip of the score we have on SoundCloud:
