CRACK IN THE WORLD / PHASE IV: LIMITED EDITION LLLCD 1392
Music by John Douglas and Brian Gascoigne
Limited Edition of 1000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $19.98

La-La Land Records, Paramount Pictures and Paramount Music present the original motion picture scores to both the 1965 sci-fi dramatic adventure CRACK IN THE WORLD, starring Dana Andrews and Janette Scott, and directed by Andrew Marton, and the 1974 sci-fi, insect cult shocker PHASE IV, starring Nigel Davenport and Michael Murphy, and directed by Saul Bass. Both scores make their premiere CD debuts here, with CRACK IN THE WORLD’S composer John Douglas (TV’s TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE) fashioning a traditionally rousing and richly dramatic orchestral ride, while Brian Gascoigne’s (THE EMERALD FOREST) PHASE IV heads in another, but no less compelling direction, with pioneering electronic and acoustic sonics creating a soundscape for the striking imagery in renowned graphic artist Saul Bass’ experimental directorial debut. Produced by Dan Goldwasser, digitally transferred by Johnny Dee Davis, and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this special, limited edition release of 1000 units features exclusive, in-depth liner notes by writer Jeff Bond and cracking art design by Goldwasser.

NOTE: CRACK IN THE WORLD was sourced from 35mm, 3-track mono DME stems, and as a result, some dialogue bleed-through can be detected. The acclaimed PHASE IV program presented on the recent Waxwork Records LP release was recreated for this CD by Doug Schwartz, from Waxwork’s unmarked, unslated source files.

Thanks LLL, it will replace the previous 2-CD edition (but I keep the Silva album, got so much spins when I was younger)

This price point is making me consider picking this up as I would not have done if it were the perfectly understandable new standard of $30 for an expansion. I quite understand the rationale, but there are fewer and fewer expansions that I'm willing to pay $35 bucks for (including shipping).

Well played, LLL. (The problem is I've put CD purchases on moratorium for a while so I can't bite yet.)

A 1995 orchestral score whose inspiration is definitely golden age. Thanks John Debney and Lalaland for bringing this back. I missed the previous 2CD release.

Awesome release LLL. The samples sound amazing and that cover art is beautiful. I'll take Cutthroat Island over Pirates of the Caribbean any day of the week (film and music). This could have been an amazing franchise, think it was a bit ahead of its time.

Just one question for MV, in the other thread (http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=110387&forumID=1&archive=0) you mentioned vinyl and download rights for this title. Are those still happening?

I know this will never get a response but why why why do you sometimes put score and then soundtrack on when they are both the same thing! --------by the way I did buy this :-)

Seemed to notice a significant improvement in detail in the samples over the Prometheus set, so I went ahead and placed an order. I would also highly recommend that anyone unfamiliar with LAIR take advantage of that deal as well; two mammoth orchestral powerhouses for $30.

Very chuffed that LLL provides high quality album art for their releases on their website/FB. Wish all the labels would follow suit (Intrada...)

I'm very excited to get this score with better sound. I also am looking forward to having some of those voluminous tracks broken down into their respective cues (even if they play unbroken on the album, it's nice to have a track mark at the beginning of a specific piece).

I know this will never get a response but why why why do you sometimes put score and then soundtrack on when they are both the same thing! --------by the way I did buy this :-)

Classically speaking, albums were labelled “Original Motion Picture Score” when the music on the record was a different recording from what's in the film (e.g. Patton or Rocky, etc.).

It was also used to differentiate an album consisting of songs from one made up of the score (e.g. Batman “Motion Picture Soundtrack” (Prince) versus Batman “Original Motion Picture Score” (Danny Elfman), or The Specialist “Original Motion Picture Score” (John Barry) versus The Specialist “Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” with the songs).

Of course, there have also been times when an album is listed as an “Original Motion Picture Score” even though there was no song album, and the recording on the album is what's heard in the film (e.g. Silence of the Lambs). And both Jaws and El Cid are labelled as “Music from the Original Soundtrack” when they are different recordings to what appeared in the film.

And, ultimately, a lot of this is determined by what was negotiated at some point along the line.

So there is no easy answer to your question.

A bit late to the game, but I was able to grab a copy of this from a trade with another board member. I have the previous two CD editions, but this one is the one to have.

The sound is spectacular, I'm no audiophile, but to me it seems to have lots more...um...snap and sparkle razz

I do miss having the finale cues faded into that 17 minute monster heh, but hearing them as separate cues is fine, it doesn't take anything away from the listening experience.

The packaging is lovely, and the notes are top notch. Really, there's not anything bad to say about this baby. It is great, start to finish.

Anybody on the fence due to already owning the older CDs, go ahead and jump, this is a great upgrade.

I do not like this score because they used orchestra.
It should be performed on keyboard.
It is the only way.
And a 2 CD sèt is ludicròus.
Who whànts all thàt mùsic???
