Well, I finally saw it. It was OK, but the movie didn't look as good as it does on Blu-ray. What they showed was a digital projection of an interpositive made from an aged internegative. That means two generations from the original camera negatives, so it looked kind of soft and a little grainy by modern standards, but what can you expect? It's almost a fifty-year-old movie.

I'm sure it looked as good as when I first saw it in April 1968, though, but I didn't care for the original mono sound. The DD and DTS 5.1 remixes on DVD and Blu-ray have spoiled me.

As I feared, only three or four other people in the audience. For me, it was practically a private viewing, but I'm glad that TCM and Fathom Events went to the effort.

There was about fifteen people in the audience for the Sunday afternoon screening. Sadly, some thoughtless twat had his phone going off towards the end.

I saw the 2 PM showing today, with two other guys. Compared to the 16mm print I saw in 1970, it looked fine to me. I'm sure that's as big a screen as I'll ever see it on. I didn't mind the interview. But how did Nicholas_DW pay only $5 to see it? It cost me $15.

I once watched a 16mm print (pan&scan) of PLANET on Ft. Lauderdale beach. The city once had a summer program some twenty-five years ago where they set up a screen and a 16mm projector on the beach and showed free movies. Everyone who showed up would sit on blankets on the sand and watch the screen. It was cool to watch the end of PLANET on a beach and hear real waves in the background.

Oh, and back in 2008 I saw an actual 35mm Panavision print of PLANET in NYC. What I saw today actually looked better than that print, so I'm not saying it was bad, it just wasn't as nice as the transfer on Blu-ray.

The cinemas in my neck of the woods have lowered prices lately. The dollar theatre recently closed and that may have put the fear of God into the owners of the multiplexes.

The one that exhibits the Classic Series is the cheaper of the two, with matinees at $5 and evening shows at $7.40. The other place has evening shows at $8.75 and I can't remember matinee prices off the top of my head. However, I inadvertently saw The Force Awakens on discount day for a whopping $3.99. Under their pre-AMC management, matinees were creeping toward $10.

My screening was nearly sold out. It was a small auditorium to begin with, but there had to have been about forty people in there. I was shocked. The previous Wednesday, there were only six people watching Fight Club. I'm sure Batman will be packed in August.
