Like this one featuring Elmer Bernstein's wonderful HAWAII.
I'm playing it right now and it's actually quite good in orchestrations and presentation. Really enjoyable. The Cinema Sound Stage Orchestra is in top form! These albums have always intrigued me. I would think they had to pay the studio legitimately for the rights. Strangely the album and packaging contain no mention of UNITED ARTISTS who made the film or United Artist Records who put out the Original Soundtrack Album. Picked this sweet puppy up for $1.00 at my local Streetlight Music.
Your thoughts and memories on these types of albums would be appreciated!
Thanks,

The Cover Artwork was trying to capture the Original character imagery as best they could I guess.
Here's another Cinema Sound Stage Orchestra release of "Sound Track Scores" with a knock-off cover. I can easily see someone walking home with this thinking that they had purchased the soundtrack LP.
Here's a cover which features images from (right to left) Gunsmoke, Bonanza, High Noon, and ??? It probably doesn't matter what the far left image is, because while the themes from High Noon and Bonanza are on the album, Gunsmoke is not.
Once the official soundtrack had been released, anyone could have recorded any kind of version they liked as long as they paid the mechanical. Using art from the film is a whole other story, but if they created their own, oh, well.
Here's another CLEOPATRA knock-off, by Russ Case and his Orchestra. In the early 1960s, Case was an arranger for "The Jackie Gleason Show," and he also arranged and conducted several Gleason albums.
