I've wondered if there are any Fellini/Rota re-recordings beside the Silva recordings (which are excellent!) and stumbled across this Polydor album: https://www.discogs.com/Rota-Toutes-Les-Musiques-De-Film-De-Fellini/release/2063174 Has this ever been re-issued on CD? I see some CAM albums which seem to have tracks from this compilation, but are extended beyond what seems to have been on the LP. Are these the same recordings - shortened for LP release?

Many thanks for the info. I have finally had time to check "Tutto Fellini" and it is quite a nice compilation with some rare material. Still, I'm unable to match some of the tracks with the Polydor recording Polydor: Toby Dammit I Clowns 3:00 CAM CD: I Clowns 5:32 Polydor: Satyricon Roma 4:42 CAM CD: Satyricon 2:06 + Roma 3:59(!) Polydor: Amarcord 1:37 CAM CD: Amarcord 6:14(!) Were these tracks given more extended treatments during the recording (and remained unissued on LP) or have they been replaced with the OST tracks for the CD re-issue?

For the double CD these tracks were taken from the original recordings which had also been conducted by Carlo Savina and in the case of I CLOWNS or AMARCORD were owned by CAM anyway. The music from the earlier Rota scores was taken from the 1974 LP album re-recording (also a CAM LP in Italy - "Tutti i film di Fellini" - with the same content as the Polydor one in France) conducted by Savina. Above all LO SCEICCO BIANCO from 1952 and I VITELLONI from 1953 had of course never been available in any form before Savina recorded short suites of them for this 1974 album.

Does this mean that the 1974 LP also used selections from the correspondent original LPs - or were these new recordings? If not, have these recordings ever appeared on CD? No, the 1974 album did not use selections from the original recordings at all. All those 13 tracks were especially recorded for that LP. Just in the same way as the Rota LP album "Musiche da film" had been recorded one year before in 1973 also by Savina. Both LPs were meant as Savina's tribute to Rota, who for a long time had been one of his best friends. In a few cases Savina had recorded for this Fellini/Rota LP in 1974 a short suite arrangement of two film scores in one single track (for example TOBY DAMMIT and I CLOWNS have been coupled in one track on the LP), so these then have - as far as I know it - never appeared on CD.

Many thanks for the help. That's not good. I wonder why they are always doing this.

Stefan, or anyone who may know, I'm curious if the contents of this CD set: are the same as the contents of this CD set: I own the earlier set with the black cover and, along with the Savina recordings, there are a handful of dreadful synth versions of some of the titles. However, clips for the download seem to have different, fully acoustic versions of Toby Dammit, Intervista, and La Voce Della Luna. Just wondering if these substitutions were made for the later CD release or only for the download. Inquiring minds want to know!

As far as I can see it, CAM had already made these substitutions for their second CD edition of "Tutto Fellini" in 2000. For this set (and the same goes for the later download version) they also removed the last track "A Nino" on the second CD of the previous edition: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Tutto-Fellini-Original-Soundtracks/release/2854224 Here you can easily see the different timings for TOBY DAMMIT, INTERVISTA and LA VOCE DELLA LUNA when you compare them with the ones on the earlier set: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Tutto-Fellini-Original-Soundtracks/release/3268228 However, GINGER E FRED still has the same version with synths arranged by Andrea Ridolfi which had been recorded for the 1991 version of the set.

Most of the "missing" Polydor tracks appeared on an early Silva Screen CD. I have not yet been able to spot a CD release containing the Polydor "Amarcord", though.

Fellini/Rota/Chailly... CD, flac or hi-res: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8617732--the-fellini-album Diapason d’Or Winner Summer Issue 2019 "Chailly’s affinity for Rota’s music is evident throughout every second of this performance...It’s clearly in the players’ blood, too, with an effortless charm that is immediately apparent...Elegance and class radiate from this joyous album dedicated to one of the most justly-celebrated cinematic partnerships" Spotify showed me this album this week and I agree it's very charming. It sounds great. The music is a bit distractingly Kachaturian at times, but overall an enjoyable listen.

That 1974 lp is a perfect album. A holy grail for me would be to get that album on cd just as it is. The 2 cd sets have been discussed, with their differing tracks here and there, nut there are also a few other compilations to add to the confusion: 1) The Ultimate Best of Fellini-Rota is a single disc CAM product with a mixture of the 1974 re-records and original tracks. 2) Homage to Federico Fellini on Butterfly Music contains original tracks, mostly. 3) There was a live in Japan Rota lp from the late 70s with one side dedicated to Fellini (CAM). This album--now expanded--is on a Japanese cd and has several excellent renditions of Fellini tunes. Most interesting there is a track called Fellini Circus, which is a crazed medley.
