SATURDAY, JULY 23

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY---is the official title of the new CBS ALL Access tv series which follows the voyage of the starship USS Discovery NCC-1031. A trailer was released showing the Discovery which resembles the unused Ralph McQuarrie-designed Enterprise that was considered for STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.
The pilot will be directed by David Semel (THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, PERSON OF INTEREST).
Also, series creator Bryan Fuller asked William Shatner if he could undo Capt. Kirk's death in STAR TREK: GENERATIONS, would he like to continue playing Kirk. Shatner replied, "Hell yes."

I liked the Kong trailer. I'd be interested in seeing that. I rather enjoyed the Godzilla film from the other year. I liked the music in the trailer there. Anyone know if it's off something already or done for the trailer? I couldn't recognise it.

The DC film trailers were a bit underwhelming. Of the 3 there I might go see Suicide Squad. That could be interesting. The Justice League trailer felt odd and not as epic as it should be. Also looked as bleak as BvS visually. Wonder Woman might be interesting. Hopefully a bit better than The Shadow or The Phantom.

Screw Godzilla. We want KING KONG vs SHATNER. I dont care if they have to CGI a 50 foot Shatner, just get it to done. Dont even justify it in the plot with movie logic.

Can't say I particularly like the design of the USS Discovery. It looks like a weird Starfleet/Klingon hybrid...a Starfleet-style saucer attached to the secondary hull of a Klingon battlecruiser....

Edit: I see now after posting, that mastadge and others posted the same observations in the other thread....glad to see I'm not the only one who feels that way!

Fifty years ago Shatner took on an ape-like creature, the Mugato, and got his ass kicked. I don't want to see that happen to him again.

Wow, that JL trailer was dire. The only thing even slightly worthwhile was they chose the cooler, bearded Aquaman from the '90s. Time to break out those old Peter David-written issues from the olde collection...

Wonder Woman, cropped head poster bitchfest notwithstanding, looks pretty impressive. The WWI scenes look good. Too bad the whole film isn't a World War I film. Hey, are there any WWI films on the horizon?

I lost interest in the series after they a couple things that should have no place in Star Trek at all, but I will say this:

Kirk never really died, so it's easy from a writer's perspective, to bring him back.

What happened on Veridian III? Soran and Picard got swallowed up by the nexus. The shockwave from the imploded sun killed overbody on the saucer when it blew the planet to pieces. Everybody was dead.

But since the nexus is some weird convergance in the sapce/time continuum, all Picard had to do was realize he was there and chose a point in tiem to go back to. He was dead as Kirk was -- both bodies destroyed by the sock wave, yet he was able to come back. Each left a decimated body in the stars and each still remain in the nexus until an exit is made. Kirk has yet to make his exit.

Agreed, JL looks like crap. Wonder Woman actually looks like a lot of fun.

When I first saw the DISCOVERY trailer, the first thing I thought was its resemblance to a Klingon ship---like others on FSM.
So if multiple people on FSM noticed it, why didn't the creative minds such as Bryan Fuller, et al., notice it---and change the ship's design.

Not a bad little teaser trailer for Kong when you consider that probably none of the many creature effects are finished (or even started yet). I hope it's a fun movie.

And it's payback time.

Dont like that? Okay, how about....PLANET OF THE KONGS.

It's possible it's intentional, and that the ship is a product of cooperative design between Federation and Klingon shipwrights. It would explain the Klingon-esque trailer scoring.

It's also possible they just wanted to retain a lot of the vintage McQuarrie design, perhaps to honor him.

---

When I first saw the trailer, the first thing I thought (from the first moment, before even getting to the ship reveal) was that the opening shot seemed like it had to be a direct homage to similar shots in 2001: A Space Odyssey... which itself features a spaceship with "Discovery" in its name.

It's a direct homage of McQuarrie's work, right down to the asteroid drydock.

Wonder Woman has an interesting trailer, but would have looked much better in color. Well, a color besides blue. Good grief, I am tired of these mutherf*ckin' BLUE movies. Do studio heads and directors actually think this shit looks good? Arrgh.

Kids today don't like color. Or they think something that looks "off" is cool and edgy. So the studio's tell us anyway.

They dont want to be accused of wearing rose-colored glasses? wink
Anyway, isnt "blue" the new sepia tone as a way of indicating an earlier era?

For all those who profess to hate CGI, you might want to start checking out computer animated movies, like Pixar's work. Ironically, they're never "graded." The colors are normal.

I hate bad CGI, unecessary CGI, and especially CGI where a real physical model should have been, considering you;d think Meyer would want that.
