The "E" on the Yamato was the second episode of season two. But that doesn't even match what's on the saucer or Picard's LCARS screen in episode eleven that same season: NCC 71807. There were also other mistaken smiliar numbers, like the last digit being "6" instead of "7".

Looking at the Memory Alpha wiki page, it claims the first number of 1305-E, was a mistake but decals were already made and placed, so it was too late. It claims the guy didn't know about the number scheme of the series, but that's a load. If being a Trekkie has taught me anything, there is absolutely no rhyme or reason for the registry numbers of Starfleet ships.

So, as a fan, I choose to go with the first one, because it sounds like an old-style name, something that would have had other decomiishioned (or destroyed or lost) class ships that lead up to the 1305-E.

Looking over, quickly a list of Starfleet ships, it appears aside from the Enterprises, the Yamato is the only other ship to bare a letter after the registry number. Unless one can be read off the Saratoga, NCC-31911-A. That's either the Wolf 359 battle or that episode of D.S.9. it was in (but probablt not seen). Unfortunately I don't see it in the kit-bash close ups, which is fascinating if you are a Trek nerd:

I'd like this one a lot more if Horner had scored it. Rosenmann's music is leaden and silly. Not a fan at all. Horner would have made this a delight for me. I would love to replace the score with Horner's work for Cocoon. I could definitely see that film's music working for Star Trek IV.
