Australian label Via Vision Entertainment has informed us that it plans to release various classic and cult films on Blu-ray. Amongst them are Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Suddenly, Last Summer, The Amityville Horror Collection, and Frank Capra's Lost Horizon.

The Amityville Horror Collection is a four disc set packed with bonus features and includes Amityville 3 in 3D. Featuring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, Rod Steiger and Burt Young, the collection remains an ever popular and chilling take on a factual family massacre which has inspired many other supernatural copycat movies. Extras include cast and crew interviews, commentaries, featurettes and informative documentaries.

Fail-Safe from Hollywood master Sidney Lumet dramatises the chaotic aftermath of when a technical malfunction causes American bombers to launch a nuclear attack on Moscow. This masterpiece of cold war realism stars Henry Fonda and Walter Matthau.

Frank Capra's Lost Horizon arrives on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world. Nominated for five Academy Awards, this epic adventure has received a 4K restoration from the original negative and includes the insertion of 1 minute of salvaged, previously unseen and thought to be lost footage.

Tennessee Williams' Suddenly, Last Summer gets the superstar Hollywood treatment with Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Katherine Hepburn in an explosive drama of family secrets, a traumatic event and personal resurgence in a high definition global premiere. Also available on Blu-ray: The Remains of the Day, Stir Crazy, See No Evil, Hear No Evil and The Toy.

Lost Horizon

A lavishly-produced classic about the enchanted paradise of Shangri-La where time stands still. After nearly 50 years, Frank Capra's timeless masterpiece, Lost Horizon was based on the best-selling novel by James Hilton. In 2014, Sony Pictures Entertainment completed an all digital restoration at Colorworks, using the preservation negative created in 1998 as the primary source, scanned at 4K and integrated with the director's personal nitrate print. Additional material was located in a badly worn 16mm print of the scene of the first meeting with the High Lama, where previously missing footage had been represented by the original soundtrack and still images. With extraordinary art direction, the set of Shangri-La is considered the largest ever built in Hollywood and it remains one of the most expensive productions for its time.

Special Features:
Alternate Ending With Narration
Photo Documentary with Narration by Historian Kendall Miller
Restoration: Before & After Comparison
3 Deleted "Never-seen-before" Scenes, with audio commentary

Suddenly, Last Summer

Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn each received Oscar nominations for Best Actress in this gripping adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play. Beautiful Catherine Holly (Taylor) is committed to a mental institution after witnessing the horrible death of her cousin at the hands of cannibals. Catherine's aunt, Violet Venable (Hepburn), tries to influence Dr. Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift), a young neurosurgeon, to surgically end Catherine's haunting hallucinations. By utilising injections of sodium pentothal, Dr. Cukrowicz discovers that Catherine's delusions are, in fact, true. He then must confront Violet about her own involvement in her son's violent death.

Fail-Safe

One of the greatest anti-war thrillers ever, Fail-Safe takes you to the verge of World War III. When a military computer error deploys a squadron of SAC bombers to destroy Moscow, the American President (Fonda) tries to call them back. But their sophisticated fail-safe system prevents him from aborting the attack, so he must convince the Soviets not to retaliate. In desperation, the President offers to sacrifice an American city if his pilots succeed in their deadly mission over Moscow. A four-star techno-thriller that builds tension and suspense with every tick of the nuclear clock.

Amityville Horror: Collection

Blood drips from the walls. A terrifying chill permeates through the rooms. Menacing eyes glow from the upstairs window and inside this charming Long Island home, an unspeakable evil lurks the halls, waiting to torment all who dare enter. Experience the ultimate in haunted house film trilogy…and delve deeper into the history of the films with vintage special features and all-new extras in a deluxe collector's boxed set.

Amityville Horror – 1979

In the first of a series of Amityville films, George (James Brolin) and Kathy Lutz (Margot Kidder), plus their cute kids, move into a riverfront home in the small town of Amityville. The house is a seemingly tranquil retreat except for one minor detail: The man who lived there prior to the Lutz family brutally killed his wife and children. Even with this knowledge, George and Kathy decide to purchase the house. As they begin unpacking their belongings, strange things start happening to them—odd nightmares, voices in the hall, and a feeling of madness that will drive them to the brink of sanity. It appears that the Lutzes are not alone inside the Amityville house, and whatever else is living with them wants them out…or dead!

Amityville Horror II – 1982

This second installment in the Amityville series is a "prequel" which traces the events leading up to The Amityville Horror. In Amityville II: The Possession, the Montelli family moves into the Amityville house replete with its demonic windows. The family's patriarch, Anthony (Burt Young), is a brutish father with a timid wife, Dolores (Rutanya Alda), two small children, and two teenagers, Patricia (Diane Franklin) and Sonny (Jack Magner). After only a few days in their new home, strange occurrences take root; the cellar produces a nasty amount of flies and feces. Malevolent voices reverberate through the halls. And most disturbing, Sonny begins to have visions of murdering his entire family. The events that follow produce a battle between good and evil that ultimately paves the way to one of the greatest horrors Amityville has ever experienced.

Amityville Horror III – 1983

In the third installment of the Amityville Horror series, the terror is not only real…it's coming to you in three dimensions! John Baxter (Tony Roberts) is a psychic investigator who spends his time debunking phony so-called "experts" of the occult. John and his wife, Nancy (Tess Harper), are recently separated with a young daughter, Susan (Lori Loughlin). John haphazardly decides to purchase the infamous Amityville house and moves in, unaware of the horrible dangers that lie inside. As John spends more and more time inside the house, he begins to endanger not only himself but also his family, friends and coworkers. It's three times the terror in Amityville 3-D!

Great news about Lost Horizon, it's one of those films that I saw on TV when I was young that really grabbed my imagination, there's really something really magical about it. It should get a release in America & Europe, but if it comes to it, I can always buy the Australian release.

I think you'll need a region free player. I believe it's Region B, although it's not stated on Via Vision Entertainment's site.

Australian label Via Vision Entertainment has informed us that it will add various new titles to its catalog in December. Amongst them are Michael Mann's Thief, Norman Jewison's Rollerball, and Blake Edwards' classic comedy The Party.

Thief

Michael Mann writes and directs this crime drama starring James Caan as the titular criminal. Professional jewel thief Frank (Caan) needs just one more job before he can retire with his girlfriend Jessie (Tuesday Weld) and fulfill his dream of starting a family. The opportunity arrives in the form of a proposition from Chicago gangster Leo (Robert Prosky), who wants Frank to get into a high-security vault in Los Angeles. Frank agrees, enlisting the help of his friend Barry (James Belushi), but it transpires that the job is not as straightforward as it at first seemed.

Special Features: Two-disc edition featuring the original and director's cuts of the film plus audio commentary by Michael Mann and James Caan.

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 7.

Rollerball

Norman Jewison's now classic sci-fi film portrays a near-future in the aftermath of the Corporate Wars, in which nations have crumbled and conglomerates rule. The year is 2018. In place of freedom the people are given bread and circuses: material comfort and rollerball itself. Played on a circular, slanted track by men on skates and motorbikes, this extreme sport is the ultimate extrapolation of the primitive blood lust implicit in many team sports. James Caan is Jonathan E, star player with the Houston team. The Corporation has taken away the woman he loves but it can't take away his soul.

Special Features: Audio commentaries by Norma Jewison and screenwriter William Harrison, UK featurette 'The Making Of Rollerball, 'Return to Rollerball' stills gallery of production design and TV spots.

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 7.

The Party

Peter Sellers plays an accident-prone Indian actor, Hrundi V. Bakshi, at large in Hollywood where he ruins a big-budget movie and is thrown off the set by the producer. However, the producer then, by accident, invites Bakshi to a Hollywood party where he manages to cause havoc once again; but this time with party guests such as a drunken starlet, a foreign princess and a model. The legendary Blake Edwards (A Shot in the Dark, Breakfast at Tiffany's) orchestrates a series of tributes to silent comedy, Jacques Tati and the poetry of chaos.

Special Features: Multiple featurettes on the making of the film and its classic status.

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 7.

Salvador

Salvador recounts the conflict between the peasant revolution and the US-backed death squads in El Salvador in the early 1980s as seen through the eyes of American photojournalist Richard Boyle. Telling unpalatable truths condensed into intense fiction, Oliver Stone's film is typically confrontational, the real Boyle writing the source material for Stone's savage screenplay. The journalist is brought to life by James Woods, who was nominated for an Oscar, in a brilliant hyper-kinetic performance: his powerful commitment to the truth balances his self-destructive, drink, drugs and danger-fueled personality. Providing excellent support is James Belushi as partner in debauchery Dr Rock, while Stone delivers the most spectacular $4 million movie imaginable by conning the El Salvadorian military into lending tanks, planes and helicopters for a film which brands many of their leaders as war criminals. Genuinely radical cinema, Salvador blisters with moral fury.

Special Features: Includes audio commentary by Oliver Stone, documentary 'Into the Valley of Death' plus deleted and extended scenes.

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 7.

Rise of the Legend

In 1868 during the late Qing Dynasty, rampant corruption on the Imperial Court inflicts much suffering in people's lives. For years, the Black Tiger's fearsome boss Lei Gong has been trying to get rid of the leader of the Northern Sea. One of his latest recruits is Fei, a fearless fighter who takes the Northern Sea leader's head after a fierce fight. Just as Lei Gong believes he has total control of the port, a new gang called the Orphans rises in power. Led by Fei's childhood friend Huo, the Orphans are out to eliminate all the criminal power from the port.

Special Features: Included on the disc is a Making of documentary.

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 7.

Wild Orchid

Set in the sultry splendor of Rio de Janeiro, Wild Orchid is a "torrid" (Variety) adventure of the senses. Filled with "exotic settings" (The Hollywood Reporter), it is a hypnotic odyssey that will leave you breathless and spellbound. Beautiful young attorney Emily Reed (Carrie Otis) travels to Rio to work with international negotiator Claudia Lirones (Jacqueline Bisset) on a multi-million dollar deal. But once exposed to the raw sensuality of her surroundings, Emily is increasingly drawn into a world of erotic fantasy. Eager to guide Emily through this underworld is Claudia's old flame Wheeler (Rourke). Mysterious and seductive, Wheeler unleashes Emily's most primitive desires even as she threatens to unlock his world-weary heart.

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 7.

F Is for Family

Created by comedian Bill Burr (Breaking Bad) and Michael Price (exec producer on The Simpsons) the Netflix animated comedy also features the voices of Laura Dern, Justin Long and Sam Rockwell.

This loosely autobiographical series explores the extremes of growing up in the 1970s. Murphy family patriarch Frank (Burr) is a middle-aged baggage worker at a regional airport. In addition to the dead end job he is battling to raise precocious kids on a low income wage in a middle class suburb. It's war all the time. He combats endless bills, a moody son flunking school and the failing systems of rustbelt America with fierce hostility. Knowing he is stuck only adds to his candid and amusing rancor.
