Lately we have been spoiled by Intrada with alternate covers for their releases. Sometimes as a nod to a original release, sometimes using images that weren't on a soundtrack before.

Although I prefer to use the 'original' cover as front in my music library, I enjoy the alternates immensely. Sometimes they can be superior to the original.

Most first soundtrack releases use poster art as the basis for their design. There have been exceptions. Some use art for a teaser poster, not the final poster art (Christopher Gordon's Daybreakers comes to mind, and Blanchard's Malcolm X) or a lesser known poster (Horner's Brainstorm). A few use little to none artwork: Star Wars, The Force Awakens. Se7en does, as does the very odd cover to Goldenthal's Demolition Man and the score deprived song album to The Lost Boys (1). The Marvel shows at Netflix had merely logo's for their soundtrack releases (to my chagrin, the artwork for the posters was lovely).

Only a handful have artwork original to the soundtrack release. The cover for Elfman's Batman was the first and only time I saw that lovely still from the film. Same for Star Trek II. That pic of the Enterprise in warp was , to my knowledge, unique for the score-release. Carpenter's Assault at precinct 13 had a nice enough poster, but used an odd still from the movie for it's soundtrack release. Same for Thomas Newman's The Lingiuni Incident. And I can't remember seeing a poster with the photo used for the soundtrack of Goldsmith's Not without my daughter.

Do you know any other examples of soundtracks that had original artwork? Promo's and new recordings (2) do not apply of course.

And, what do you think of 'm; do you prefer new artwork over movie poster design?

Examples in new posts to keep this from cluttering.

I'll use links for the more known examples. I reckon most of you know the covers of these, so providing the entire pic could be enjoying to a lot of readers. In the case that you don't know 'm, you can find 'm here.

Batman

Of course they had to differentiate the cover to the score from the Prince-album, which used the movie-art.

Star Trek II

Footnotes:

(1) Somebody please release this score!

(2) I use the term new recording for new interpretations or recreations of scores, such as the wonderful work of Tadlow, by Morris and Stromberg and what Varèse did with Debney, McNeely, Goldsmith and others. The term re-recording might be useful if the composer himself records a score right after a film's release, such as Horner did with Brainstorm. Otherwise, a fantastic album such as The Blue Max of Rio Conchos on Intrada for example describing as a re-recording doesn't do it justice. 'New recording' fits it better, I think.

Death Waltz, Mondo, Waxwork, etc., all use original artwork on their releases. Some examples:

From Beyond/Waxwork Art by Marc Schoenbach

Aliens/Mondo Art by Kilian Eng

The Lost Empire/Death Waltz Art by Rockin' Jelly Bean

I love the artwork that was created exclusively for the Huntsman: Winter's War vinyl release.

Regular soundtrack release (pretty much a combination of theatrical posters):

I hate it when the artwork is not appropriate to the era or style of the film.

Almost all of the Monstrous Movie Music releases have new artwork. Some by Vincent DiFate!
I think Intrada's BUCK ROGERS and BATTLESTAR GALACTICAs had newly commissioned art for the CDs.

Matthew Joseph Peak made the amazing movie posters of the 5 initial Nightmare On Elm Street films. I think it was great that Varese asked him to create an original art for the original score release of Nightmare 6.

He has created other great covers for Varese.

In the my case, the poster design.

Nontypical composers like Nick Cave or Trent Reznor almost always use unique artwork for their soundtrack releases, to make their albums stand on its own.

Examples:

The Proposition

I personally love it when a soundtrack album gets treated like an original release, with original artwork and all. That was also one of my main motivations behind creating and publishing alternate soundtrack covers on my personal site, for which I'd like to take the liberty now and leave a link right here: www.hqcovers.net

No preference on my part, it -- as so often -- depends. Original soundtrack cover art can be great, like the original soundtrack cover for THE THING, one of my all time favorite LP soundtrack covers.
