“What Hans did for the ‘Pirates’ movies redefined the sound of the entire genre,” Zanelli says. “It has been very fulfilling to work alongside him and [producer] Jerry [Bruckheimer] on the past four films. ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ enlarges the ‘Pirates’ universe with many new, unique elements, and I’m building a distinctive sound for this film that springboards off of many years of collaborating in the ‘Pirates’ world.”
Just announced today! I know that the POTC scores aren't well loved here, but I'm still a big fan of Zanelli, particularly his work on the past four POTC scores and his most recent action/adventure score, The Scorpion King 4. If HZ can't do it, Zanelli is the best person to fill his shoes!
Geoff is an awesome choice. So happy for him. Great guy. Fantastic composer! His Mortdecai score is actually really, really good. And his William Tell Overture piece from THE LONE RANGER is the best thing in the film!
I am not sure what to think of it. A Pirates without HANS ZIMMER ain't good. But this choice was weird. I think he'll just mimic Zimmer's style for Pirates, seeing how Geoff is in the "Zimmer company". Not sure what to expect of this

Zimmer contributed themes. Many of the specific cues were those themes arranged by other composers. And some of the best cues Zimmer has "written" were actually by Geoff Zanelli, so...
Did Zanelli do the wonderful "Up Is Down" from PotC 3? That's by far the best cue of the entire franchise for me, and I don't think it was Zimmer who composed it (though I might be wrong)...
"Up is Down" is actually Henry Jackman, and as far as I can tell it has it's origins in one of the new love theme suites composed for POTC3 by Zimmer and Jackman.
My favorite, longer rendition of this can be heard here at 7:10:
A little off topic, but I rather wish Disney would release expanded editions of the Pirates films (specifically the first three). Curse of the Black Pearl's original album sounds too loud anyway, and all three could use expansions.

The issue with CotBP is that I believe some of the more percussive parts are heavily distorted as a result of Zimmer et al. having so little time to prepare the score. If Disney wanted to release an expanded version of that film, I'd expect they'd want to clean those parts up... the question is whether they'd deem it worth the effort.
