I think some of you who disliked it must have expected another INDEPENDENCE DAY or something (nothing against that movie, but it's a very different beast altogether).

I thought the "Terrence Malickisms" were absolutely gorgeous and fitting; not to mention the fact that most answers were left in ellipses or were unsaid altogether.

Also, I don't think the film felt particularly slow or unconventional. Perhaps in a "Hollywood blockbuster" sense, but that's not what it's about. I'm so thankful that science fiction like this is still being produced with regular intervals -- thoughtful, mysterious, contemplative and also thrilling in its own way.

Personal tragedy and aliens, just didn't pull it off. Loved Interstellar and Ex Machina. Wasn't bad 2 stars. Boy in my cinema the image was very dark the whole movie. A little too conventional.

Glad I read these reviews. I did comment on the ambient music and then later on the lovely music at the beginning and end of the movie. I had no idea that those first and last pieces were composed by Max Richter. Learn something everyday.

Awesome review Broxton. Johannsson is clearly working working on another level. I find all his work extremely fascinating and challenging which I love. This is something that he shares with fellow Icelandic artists that I adore- namely Bjork and Sigur Ros.
I can't get enough of this, but I'm the type of guy who still listens to Lou Reed's - Metal Machine Music with a huge smile on my face!

I thought it was a wonderful film.

Fascinating, ultimately moving film. Score was fine in evoking an "alien, other" atmosphere, but I doubt I'd buy it on CD.

I know I'm really late to the party here and some of you expressed interesting thoughts, but I DO believe this should be the Film Score of the Year. I felt it was just a perfect marriage of Sound and visual and the sound never overstepped at all (meaning no Egos wanted to show their orchestration skills and prows over the film's story and premise.)

I disagree with the comment about the String quartet at the end of the film being forced, I just believe you weren't involved in the film enough for that moment to work but it worked for me and felt right musically since I Understood what is going on here and it helped the Tragic/happy ending in a way.

Great score indeed and Johann Johannsson continues to impress!

Just like SICARIO- perfect marriage of sound and visual. Should have won the Oscar. No, I'll never stop making this statement. smile

Awesome musical journey into an otherworldly soundscape! Absolutely love what Johannsson has created here. It's certainly not everyone's cup of tea but boy, it is mine!

It's a functional score. Saw the fine film last night. I remembered the opening and closing cues, which aren't even Johannsson's. The montage cue with the staccato voices was memorable and effective. The rest pretty much just droned away in the background.

I find the stand alone listen to be lethargic and quite a slog to get through.

A fantastic and challenging score that proves that Johansson is one of the leading talents in original film music composition. It seems like Blade Runner 2 is in good hands considering his ability to capture otherworldly sounds.

I am with Erik Woods on this one. What a terrible score! I liked what Jóhannsson did with SICARIO but this one has nothing to appeal. The whole experience felt liked sound effects and worst of all it's that some people are taking this as some kind of "intellectuality" thing when it's just noisy.

I also thought the film was awful, manipulative at its worst and empty, full of feelings but not emotions actually.

Nowadays, Villeneuve and Jóhannsson are untouchables for critics. They are praising everything they do, whatever. It's the most overrated collaboration director/composer of our times and I am bit worried because a lot of "professional" voices in the world are giving them good reviews, not matter what's really on screen!

A frustranting experience. This project had a lot of possibilities in storytelling, film music and film director. On paper, I am sure this was a cinematic project with a lot of power. Instead, I have no idea what this movie was about yet.

What else is overrated? I have not seen the film, nor will I film in the theatre. I can get with it not being everyone's "cup o' tea" , but The score is freaking amazing! I agree with previous poster. As I listened for the 6-7 time to Arrival and Orphee this weekend. Blade Runner is in most capable hands.

It´s interesting to see that there´s always the same reaction to a project that attracts positive attention. On the one hand the hype, then the counterreaction "why the hype, it´s totally overrated"!

As with every work of art one should trust only one´s own perception. And as with every work of art you will either connect with it or not, based on your personal experiences and interests.

I was moved on an emotional level by the film (despite the overuse of the Richter piece), but I do not understand the appeal of Johannsson's score, outside of the "Kangaru" stuff (which is pretty much a Steve Reich trick that also manages to reveal an Interstellar temp track that itself was inspired by Philip Glass). The low-end growling is just more Horn Of Doom bullshit, just like his Falling Down-esque growling in Sicario. Overrated.

I just posted about this movie on the other side of this board. If you have thoughts or ideas about this movie's symbols and meaning, post them on the non music side. It might be interesting to see various interpretations.

Little behind the scenes with a few shots from the Prague sessions as well...

Thanks for this!

I love this movie, probably the best serious sci-fi since "Contact".

The score is perfect for the movie and the use of Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight" is just sublime.

I finally saw the film! It was really good. The score fitted the film, but nothing I could listen to outside of the movie.
