Okay, so there's this new documentary coming out called 24X36: A Movie About Movie Posters. My question is, what movie poster fan worth his salt would consider 24x36 an official size for a movie poster??? One sheets are 27x41 (reprints 27x40); half sheets 22x28; inserts 14x36; etc. The only place you get 24x36 is at STAPLES!!

I like the smaller posters, they're cheaper to frame & great if you don't have much wall space. Belgium & French ones are good, small but very colourful, I have a few from the far off days when I used to go to film fairs. Sitting in my little lounge I can see: Helen Of Troy (Helene de Troie), The Curse Of The Werewolf (La Nuit Du Loup-Garou), The Pit & The Pendulum (La Chambre Des Supplices), Fort Apache, The Raven, Jason & The Argonauts, Land Of The Pharaohs, King Kong '76 & Duck You Sucker. I have a sort of third size (is that a halfsheet?) US poster of Atlantis & In Like Flint (that one looks so cool) & a full size UK poster of, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth. All originals, I don't know what they go for these days, I paid £80 for Journey & £60 for Flint, the others weren't too expensive at all (about 18 years ago).

I guess we'll have to see the movie to know why they chose those numbers for the title. I do know lots of commercial posters - not ones used in theaters, but mass-market posters ordinary people can buy in stores - are often 24x36", but I've never heard of that being used for theatrical posters.

One sheets are 27x41 (reprints 27x40)

I was long under the impression standard 1-sheets were 27x41" until the mid-'80s, and then went to 27x40". I do know my own 1-sheets conform to that, whether original or reprint, but I admit I don't have a huge collection; probably much smaller than those of many others here.

Indeed. Tsk, tsk.

I think I've had maybe two movie posters in my life -- THE SHINING and INDEPENDENCE DAY. They were both plastered directly on my wall (well, THE SHINING poster with Jack breaking through the door was appropriately placed on my door) in my teenage room. At some point, they had so much wear and tear that I had to throw them away.

But if I had lived in a bigger apartment with bigger walls, and had money to spare, there are plenty of great posters I would have put up, all framed in glass.

Seems like a fascinating documentary -- hopefully not only for the collectors. I'd watch it.

I'd be more than happy to answer that. I directed it.

The film focuses specifically on illustration in movie poster art, its history, its disappearance from key art, and its resurgence thanks to screenprint companies and galleries like Mondo. We explain various different types of posters and dimensions in the film, but seeing as the studios who are creating standard one-sheets (27x41 and 27x40) have all but abandoned illustration in key art, they, quite frankly, didn't earned the title - the screenprinters and artists working to keep illustration alive did, and their highly collectible, officially licensed posters are 24x36.

Hope this answers your question, and I hope you enjoy the film.

I make my own movie soundtrack posters. Only 30"x30", though. smile

Thanks for the info Kevin. The film actually looks like a lot of fun. I was merely curious about the title, which you've explained. Best of luck with the picture.
