I loved these things as a kid. If they hadn't used John Williams' music in the Star Wars ones, I may have never gotten into film music (owned The Black Hole too).
I like how they use the proper sound fx, music, but different actors. Some of it's quite cheesy...
Never hoid the TMP adaptation, but the old Power Record Star Track records had stories on par with the majority of TOS episodes. The voice actor who played Kirk was quite good.

I've owned or heard all of the Star Trek Power Records audioplays and a couple of them are quite good (A Mirror for Futility and A Crier in Emptiness are exceptional for the genre). But to suggest they were on par with "the majority" of the original episodes is, to me, a laughable dismissal of a legendary series.
The guy doing Kirk is almost bordering on parody. It makes me giggle...reminding me of Jim Carrey doing Shatner. I remember as a kid thinking they've manage to remove all the mystery out of it.
Clearly, the storybook was made long before the movie came out. It really shows what Douglas Trumbull and Goldsmith brought to this movie, especially at the 11th hour.
