The tapes may be lost but they could still exist but Bond music is a rights horror show. Keep fingers crossed.....

I've heard the original tapes are lost. That's based upon what Lukas was told a dozen years ago or more. "Missing" tapes get found all the time, so it's not necessarily true today. Here we go again! ;-) No, this is a misquote. Lukas Kendall didn't actually say the Moonraker tapes were lost. What he actually said was they were not stored in the same location as the other scores they were expanding as part of the 2003 editions. Since they were short of time and budget and were only expanding five scores anyway, they didn't go searching, but he also said he had an idea about where they possibly were. But that got misquoted as, "Lukas Kendall said the Moonraker tapes are lost." And it's been passed down like that ever since. Since Moonraker was recorded at Davout studios in Paris, people then started to assume the tapes must be there. Stephane Larouge contacted Davout and was told that any tapes still stored there were dumped some years ago. So then it was, "The tapes were dumped by Davout." Except that was a case of adding two and two and making five. First of all, although the score was recorded at Davout, believe it or not they had to do more than just record the score. They also had to dub the film. And that occurred in England. So tell me again why the tapes would be in Paris? Indeed, Jon Burlingame's book confirms the tapes were shipped to the UK—Denham, I think I recall—for dubbing. And, in 1999, members of the James Bond fan club positively sighted Moonraker music recordings in crates at Pinewood studios. So, if we separate the facts from the hearsay, what we know about the Moonraker tapes is: a. They are not in Paris. b. They were shipped to the UK in 1979. c. They were positively sighted at Pinewood in 1999. d. They were not vaulted with YOLT, OHMSS, DAF, etc, in 2003. Conclude from that what you will, but anything other than those four facts is a confabulation rather than a confirmed fact. Cheers

The Barry estate almost certainly has a complete copy of this—and almost certainly has complete copies of Raise The Titanic, Night Games, Game of Death and other gems reported 'lost' or 'unexpandable'. I say this because I've heard it from multiple sources including those who claim they've heard it direct from Richard Kraft, that JB kept copies of everything. We know that everything prior to 1974 was lost, but everything since 1975 was, it is said, kept. Unfortunately, however, it's kind of irrelevant whether that's true or not since the Barry estate is rather famous for keeping everything private and locked behind closed doors. Cheers

The fact that the re-recording was put to a halt, somehow made me think that the "official" forces in charge think of doing it themselves - sooner or later - and thus gave me hope that the tapes are properly stored (as Stephen has just confirmed). If the Barry estate should have copies of everything post-1974, it would be a real shame, because I assume these tapes are not properly stored - leave alone backed-up for future use

I have less faith in the official powers that be, Stefan. I honestly think they are nothing better than apathetic towards the old scores and I'm sure they just can't understand why people aren't happy with the same old vanilla reissues of the original albums. Which is all I ever see them trotting out. I think they are just very possessive and lacking in trust for people who say they want to do something with Bond related material. Remember the same official powers that be didn't want to collaborate with Jon Burlingame on his book. And that's a proven, professional film music journalist. At best, they don't want to let anyone come in a threaten the sales of the existing merchandise. At worst, I think they just don't want anybody playing with their ball, period. I have no faith any expansion of Moonraker will happen unless someone like a Chris Neel builds a bridge between such powers and somebody like a Lukas Kendall. I don't see Eon or MGM or Sony or EMI or Capitol or anybody lifting a finger for an expanded Moonraker off their own back. Cheers
