FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS---Johnny Depp is in talks to play murder victim Samuel Ratchett in the Kenneth Branagh remake movie. Other cast members include Branagh as Hercule Poirot, Judi Dench as Russian princess Natalie Dragomiroff, Michelle Pfeiffer as Mrs. Hubbard, Daisy Ridley as Mary Debenham, Derek Jacobi as Edward Masterman, Michael Pena as Marquez and Lucy Boynton as Countess Helena Andrenyl.

THE TERROR---AMC ten-part anthology series based on the novel about an 1847 Royal Navy expedition to find the Northwest Passage which is stalked by a mysterious creature. Jared Harris (MAD MEN) will play Captain Francis Crozier, commander of the HMS Terror and the expedition's second in command. Ciaran Hines (GAME OF THRONES) will play Sir John Francis, the expedition leader.

GAME OF THRONES---HBO programming president Casey Bloys commented on a spinoff after the series ends, “There are things that sound interesting, but at this point, we have no writers assigned or anything like that. In a perfect world, GAME OF THRONES would keep going, and we wouldn’t have to deal with any of this… There are so many properties and areas to go to. For us, it’s about finding the right take with the right writer.”
Casey also commented on creators David Benioff and DB Weiss returning, “...It’s a big, big commitment for them, not just their creative force, but also their family life. They’re gone for months at a time. So it’s a big, big thing. But should we find a property that makes sense as a spinoff or a prequel...I would not expect them to do it, because they’re going to need to decompress for a good amount of time, but it would certainly be nice to have their involvement in some way. At what level? I have no idea.”

GIRL 10---Jessica Alba is the executive producer of this new Fox sci fi series about a girl with Artificial Intelligence who is suspected of murder and is pursued by an evil organization who seeks her AI.

JAMES BOND---executive producer Callum McDougal commented on Daniel Craig returning as Bond, “I wish I knew. We love Daniel. We would love Daniel to return as Bond. Without any question he is absolutely Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli’s first choice. I know they’re hoping for him to come back.”

THE CURRENT WAR---Michael Shannon is in negotiations to co-star with Benedict Cumberbatch in this movie about the electricity supply war between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse.

DOCTOR WHO---Justin Chatwin (WAR OF THE WORLDS) will appear on the Christmas special as a "superhero character" with interstellar secrets of one sort or another." Also, Matt Lucas returns as Nardole.

DISOBEDIENCE---Rachel Weisz is the star/oroducer of this movie about a woman who returns home after her estranged Orthodox Jewish father dies and begins a lesbian relationship with her cousin's wife.

ORIGIN---Dan Brown's fifth Robert Langdon novel will be published on September 26, 2017.

ELEVEN LITTLE INDIANS--Fox animated comedy series underway from M. Night Shyamalan and Alex Carter (FAMILY GUY). The plot is about three Indian families in the US. One family has achieved the American dream, the other has just arrived and the third is dysfunctional.

ARROW---the villains for the four-part musical crossover will be The Dominators.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN---Kristine Froseth will star in the TNT pilot based on the Swedish vampire novel.

THE PURGE---writer/director James DeMonaco said a tv series based on the movie series is underway.

I've had the book of The Terror for a few years now, but never got around to reading it (in fact I can't remember if it went in the last clear-out - I'm not at home right now). The idea of taking a genuine historical mystery & adding a monster to it sounds fun.

"Murder on the Orient Express" is a movie that needs no reinvention or retelling other than to feature performances by current actors/actresses.

The original Sidney Lumet production remains stunning, hand-in-hand with its awesome Richard Rodney Bennett score (which sent Bernard Herrmann into a rant over using a waltz to glorify a death train).

The TV remake in the Hercule Poirot/David Suchet series was much darker than the film. It has its moments but does not erase the film from memory in any way. (in fact, I found the Suchet documentary shot on the Orient Express far more interesting than their interpretation of the story).

I am happy to anticipate this new production, to see what Branagh will bring to it, and to embrace a new cast portraying characters with whom I am most familiar.

While they are all at it, how about a serious re-telling of "And Then There Were None" for the movies???

I enjoyed it a lot right up to the last chapter and then I can't remember why but I wasn't really won over by the ending. But there's some great bits in it and just the historical details I found very interesting. Would make a decent series if the snowy landscapes look convincing.

This is the only thing here mentioned that interests me because it sparks the imagination, like what if the monster turned out to be Frankenstein's creature?

"That was a train of death!" Love that story (and the score).
