Since there was a recent post about "Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man", do you think there's a possibility that they might come out with a complete set of all the scores for the Universal horror films (original soundtracks, re recordings, are MAYBE both?). It may take two sets!!!

I doubt it but I'd be happy to be proven wrong!

If only someone could stitch something like that together and give it life! I think it might thrill you. It might even horrify you.

A box set of Universal horror scores from the 30s and 40s would be fantastic. These horror films are still very popular so perhaps the music would sell well too. Some people have said there is no music available from this period. If true, then new recordings are the only answer.

I'm afraid the only acetates that survive are from BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN and MAN MADE MONSTER. Plus isolated cues from THE MUMMY'S HAND and BLACK FRIDAY. There's a main title cue which is a variation on the main title to THE MYSTERY OF MARIE ROGET.

Unfortunately, the market for the scores of Roemheld, Skinner and Salter is limited to only a fraction of the ever-dwindling pool of soundtrack buyers. I know John and Bill would love nothing more than to do new recordings of these wonderful scores (including A&C) but the cost vs return is simply prohibitive. It would very literally take an endowment to make such a project feasible. I think Hefner is beyond that and Scorsese & Packard aren't really oriented toward vintage horror scores.

You'd think with Universal milking and squeezing every penny out of re-re-re and re-releasing their horror library they might be interested in funding such a project but I don't think it would have a chance.

We above the age of forty -- and maybe only those above fifty -- may be the last generation that cares about these scores. Last night I watched WEREWOLF OF LONDON (1935) with a score by Karl Hajos. I know that a lot of this score was later used in the first "Flash Gordon" serial, but how many others currently alive know this or even care I doubt would be enough to fill a medium sized movie theater.

Much of the DVD bonus features for BRIDE seem to use large amounts of the Waxman score. A stand alone release would be welcomed.

It is true that it is difficult to keep up with the "latest" and "best" home video version of these films as they have been reissued so many times, one does not know which one to get!

If you want to see the FRANKENSTEIN and WOLF MAN movies and their sequels looking their best, pick up the two new "Legacy Collections" now on Blu-ray and currently only $19.99 at Amazon. All are transfers made from 4K scans of the best elements, often the OCNs. BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, which is also available on Blu-ray by itself, looks the best it ever has on video and features a restored soundtrack.

WEREWOLF OF LONDON is included in the Wolf Man collection, but unfortunately hasn't been restored. I watched it last night and although its picture transfer is generally fine in HD, its soundtrack is a mess with many clicks and pops and uneven levels.

Well you buy the new Blu-ray Frankenstein Legacy set of course!! Eight superbly restored films that look just about perfect to me...& Amazon are selling it for $19.99, the price of a single soundtrack. A steal!!

As for the music, buy the CD's of House Of Frankenstein & Monster Music on Naxos (John Morgan/William Stromberg) & you have music from: The House Of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man & The Son Of Frankenstein, & the CD's are very cheap.

I've always found the 1993 CD from Silva Screen of BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, re-recorded by the Westminster Philharmonic conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, to be quite nice. It also includes a suite from THE INVISIBLE RAY.

I'm not sure if it's still available.

Absolutely. 100%. I thought this album was amazing, and still do. I remember that when I first came to the web and forums I was horrified that there were those that moaned about less than great performances. It's wonderful! Good enough to not be replaced.

I remember that before this, and never having touched a computer, but having experienced the label that is Silva Screen, I actually phoned them and told them what I'd love to see as soundtrack or rerecording. Top of the list was BoF. And the guy (Dave Wishart quite possibly) told me it was ON IT'S WAY!!

After all this talk recently of Universal monsters music I stuck this and W&S wonderful House of Frankenstein cds on and have being experiencing bliss ever since!

I bought some Universal films that were on sale at Walmart for $8CAD each for a DVD.

The Invisible Man
The Mummy
The Wolfman
Creature From the Black Lagoon

Only watched The Invisible Man, but thought it was really good and holds up very well, even the special effects. Some nice model work. Only the of-the-time comedy mugging by a few peasants and coppers i could have done without. But Claude Raines is excellent and the direction was pretty good, in general. I really like the HG Wells story, too. I thought this was a great adaption of it.

But i'm looking forward to seeing the others. I don't think i've ever seen The Mummy or Creature.

(Oops, meant to reply to a film rather than score thread on the other side of the board).

Seconded! The Legacies are what I viewed before commenting on both Frankenstein...Wolf Man threads. But who needed to buy, I borrowed them from the local library cooperative. Glad there were no disc scratches, blips, etc. that sometimes happens with library materials.
