FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14

THE ESCAPE---new trailer released for the BMW short film starring Clive Owen.

Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHp2wYmu5Qc

MEG---photo of Jason Statham and Li Bingbing and the official synopsis were released from the movie based on the novel.

"A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time."

WAR OF THE WORLDS---MTV tv series is underway based on the classic HG Wells novel from the creators of TEEN WOLF. The tv series will have a contemporary setting. Co-producer Josh Barry is the grandson of Gene Barry, who starred in the 1953 movie based on the novel. The 2005 movie starred Tom Cruise (2005), and a tv series ran from 1988-1990.

WONDER WOMAN---DC Entertainment head Diane Nelson said director Patty Jenkins gave WONDER WOMAN a lighter tone than BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and SUICIDE SQUAD, “There’s a misconception that DC or Warner Bros. has made a conscious decision for all our movies to be darker or edgier. That’s not the case. Fans of the DC universe know that there are characters, like Batman, who are darker, but there are others like Wonder Woman, who are hopeful, optimistic leaders, and the tone of this film represents that. Patty brought a beauty and a sense of lightness or humor, and a little romance to it. It’s a very aspirational movie.”

THE WOLF MAN---Dave Callaham (THE EXPENDABLES) will rewrite the script for the Universal Pictures remake movie.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM---JK Rowling said there will be five movies in the series.

MARY KILLS PEOPLE---new Lifetime tv series about two doctors who run an underground euthanasia practice. Caroline Dhavernas (HANNIBAL, THE PACIFIC) stars.

THE RAINMAKER---CBS tv pilot underway based on the John Grisham novel. Matt Damon starred in the 1997 movie based on the novel.

WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS---Mark Rylance (BRIDGE OF SPIES) stars in this movie based on the political thriller novel.

DON QUIXOTE---Walt Disney Pictures live-action movie underway with a script by Billy Ray (THE HUNGER GAMES).

THE LION KING---Jeff Nathanson (INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL) will write the script for the Walt Disney Pictures remake movie.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN---Thomas Kretschmann and Benjamin Wadsworth will star in the TNT pilot based on the Swedish novel.

Nice picture of the Wolf Man (from FMTWM) but shouldn't this proposed creature be called a "remake of a remake"? And written by someone who wrote THE EXPENDABLES? YIKES!!!!!! It'll be a horror, alright.

I think the War of the Worlds TV series was first run syndication.

If Li Bingbing married actor Brian Benben, would her name be Li Bingbing-Benben?

TEX1272:

You're right.
If HG Wells had seen it, he would be rolling over in his grave.

re: Meg. Why has it taken them 20 frickin years to get this movie made. Like, I remember when the book came out in 1997 and even pre-release it was already being touted as going to be a big movie, the author was Michael Crichton and Peter Benchley rolled into one, hyperbole out the wazoo. It's a frickin' shark movie. How has it taken it 20 years to happen?

Because it wouldn't have starred Jason Statham 20 years ago??

They needed to wait for CGI technology to get better. Meanwhile, the story has grown stale. It's going to stink like a dead fish.

I think the War of the Worlds TV series was first run syndication.

It was, and was part of a boom of such series at the time, with surely the most notable example being Star Trek: The Next Generation. And also like ST:TNG, it was a continuation of a story begun decades earlier (both in-universe and in the real world), as it was a direct sequel to the 1953 George Pal film.

Very disappointed about the War of the Worlds news. Last I heard Peter Harness (who already has a period tv fantasy adaptation to his credit: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, as well as last year's Zygon two-parter for Doctor Who) was supposed to be writing an adaptation of it set in the book's own time.

The last thing we need is an updated one. I'm a big fan of the George Pal version, but with the 80s tv series we already have three modern ones. It's time for a Victorian England set version. Hoping for one out of four is hardly greedy!

If of course the update is either a mistaken report on the one above, or AS WELL, it's matterless, but I'd rather see a film of Jeff Wayne's musical album than an update if we can't have a 'straight' attempt.

There was a version directed by Timothy Hines that was set in Victorian England, and also released in 2005 (there were actually three different movie adaptations of the book all released that same year, though only the Spielberg one is well-known). It's reputedly, um... not very good.

Jeff Wayne's classic 1978 album (which itself has an adaptation as a computer game, believe it or not) is also set in the original bovel's time and place, of course. But yeah, it would be cool to have a good, big-budget, major motion picture with decent distribution that retained the book's setting.

Plea to the filmmakers: We need a 75-foot shark. Please don't hide it in the darkness.

The History Channel's The GREAT MARTIAN WAR.

The huge open mouth full of teeth coming up out of the dark when least expected is all that's needed to make it do all that it can on screen.

I don't understand how I'm supposed to be as scared of a beast that could swallow me like Tylenol.

I'm sure i read in Fangoria over the years - going back ten years ago - that Gary Tunnicliffe, the English FX chap, had been developing MEG for ages. I was wondering how they'd get it done on a Proteus/Hellraiser sequel-sized budget.

There's nothing that interesting about a 75 foot shark. It'll eat your yacht! It can't get near beaches! There'll be a submersible battle for sure, with one probably going inside the Meg and exploding. Betcha!

25 foot and 3 tonnes is the perfect size for killer sharks.

Yes, the "definite article" version is still the definitive version. smile
