THE HAUNTED MANSION Composed and Conducted by MARK MANCINA INTRADA Special Collection 364 In celebration of Halloween 2016, Intrada premieres Mark Mancina's score to the 2003 Disney film adaptation of the world-famous Haunted Mansion ride at Disney theme parks around the world. When composer Mancina was brought in by director Rob Minkoff, Minkoff asked Mancina to capitalize on the “Grim Grinning Ghosts” melody, and he did so with gusto. “I love that theme,” Mancina says, “so that was a really fun little piece to go to—because, really, the movie has extremely little to do with the ride, but that was the one thing we could really call back to, and throw in here and there and have fun with.” The opening title ushers us into the familiar chambers of the ride, and from there Mancina references the tune in a diverse range of variations. His lengthy score that spills over onto a second CD, contains both highly charged action sequences and, at heart, an achingly beautiful minor-mode idea for Elizabeth, the lost love that so haunts mansion owner Edward Gracey. The soundtrack released at the time of the film featured mostly vocals with one score track by Mancina. This new edition focuses on Mancina's score, including alternates and extras, and was sourced from the digital two-track stereo scoring session mixes. The Haunted Mansion tells the tale of a wealthy plantation owner (Nathaniel Parker) in antebellum New Orleans, whose forbidden love for a beautiful black woman, Elizabeth (Marsha Thomason), resulted in a tragic end for them both. In the present day, real estate agent Jim Evers (Eddie Murphy) and his wife Sara (also Thomason) and their two children are summoned to the mansion under the ruse of selling it. There they encounter a forbidding butler (Terrence Stamp), the mysterious Master Gracey, and a host of ghosts trapped inside the mansion and adjacent cemetery. Gracey reveals that he wants Sara for himself, convinced by his butler that she is in fact Elizabeth—and it takes the help of some friendly haunts (played by Jennifer Tilly, Wallace Shawn and Dina Waters) to uncover the truth and set Gracey, Elizabeth and the house’s captive ghosts free. Awesome!! I'll wait just to make sure Varese doesn't release something even better (for me) next week, but I'll be keeping an eye on this anyhow.

I just wanted to chime in and let anyone know who doesn't usually go ga-ga for Mancina: this is perhaps the best score he ever wrote, and much, much better music than you would expect to be done for such a film. Give the samples a listen; this is well worth a purchase and I commend Intrada for doing it (and adding an extra disc to fit the complete score, to boot!) And did anyone notice that this two disc set costs only $24.99 instead of $29.99? Yavar

Wow, Mancina on Intrada - that's a first! I have an unmentionable of Haunted Mansion. Not a favorite. I prefer MM in Bad Boys/Fair Game-mode.

Great deal. I encourage people to pick this one up.
