This is a sad reminder of the fact that local broadcasting has virtually disappeared. It used to be that all major cities and markets had local tv news, entertainment and radio stations. Now , everything is nationally syndicated and talk radio is all day right wing talk show hosts (Limbaugh, Savage etc.) "They called them the good old days because they were" - Herb Caen brm

Most cities seemed to have one of these "horror hosts." In Pittsburgh, we had William "Bill" Cardille also known as Chilly Billy, who from 1963 to 1983 hosted "Chiller Theatre" a late night Saturday program that showed horror and science fiction films. In looking him up, I just discover that he died this past July at age 87. Wow, another piece of my childhood gone. As you might expect, there is a Wikipedia article about these hosts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_host don't forget the immortal COunt Floyd of "Monster, Horror, Chiller Theater" SCTV here in SF, we had Jon STanley

Was traveling back east when I learned the sad news. (Just got back into town here in Hollywood last Friday). Thanks for posting this, Ray. You mention KPIX Chiller Theater, but surely you must have the same happy memories I do of Zach's first Manhattan venue on ABC's Shock Theater. (Or are you younger than I think you are, wise beyond your years?) Nowadays we think it sacrilege if our favorite films are broadcast in anything less than their original pristine, uninterrupted completeness, but I daresay Zacherley's playing havoc with the Universal monster classics endeared these treasures all the more to us budding monster kids. Humorously narrating the films on weeknights, hilariously inserting himself into the visuals on weekend evenings, impishly leading into the commercials, and of course furthering the advancement of science with his mad lab experiments... Whence comes such another? What a blessing he was to the bloom of our youth.
