Zacherley, the Cool Ghoul, has passed away at 98. Many of us boomers got our first frights with Zach on WPIX's Chiller Theater. He was a very gracious guest at banquets and conventions and had fiends everywhere. Heads off to Zacherley!

That's a shame sorry to hear that 98 is a grand age a good life. I do remember a few films Cry of the Werewolf & Return of the Vampire. R.I.P. John Zacherley

Unfortunately, he was a bit before my time. By the time I became aware of Chiller Theater and Creature Features, the era of horror hosts like him was pretty much over (mid-sixties). But I knew who he was. 98 is a long life.

Yup, I'm one of 'em. Can still remember the cut to a cheesy studio poster on a pole that said something like $1,000,000 with an arrow pointing down, then a quick cut back to Lon Chaney picking up greeenbacks in The Indestructible Man. Trying to recall what flick viewing that had a Zacherley-whooping-it-up-at-a-party insert...

He was named "Roland" when he first appeared on one of my local TV stations in Philadelphia in the 50s before NYC)- he was camp before that had its current meaning. He had several hit records as well.

This is a sad reminder of the fact that local broadcasting has virtually disappeared.
It used to be that all major cities and markets had local tv news, entertainment and radio stations.

Now , everything is nationally syndicated and talk radio is all day right wing talk show hosts (Limbaugh, Savage etc.)

Most cities seemed to have one of these "horror hosts." In Pittsburgh, we had William "Bill" Cardille also known as Chilly Billy, who from 1963 to 1983 hosted "Chiller Theatre" a late night Saturday program that showed horror and science fiction films. In looking him up, I just discover that he died this past July at age 87. Wow, another piece of my childhood gone.

As you might expect, there is a Wikipedia article about these hosts:

Real Gone put out a great CD of Zacherle's first two Cameo-Parkway albums, with some rarities thrown in.

I read that since the sixties he had lived in the same one-bedroom apartment on the west side of Manhattan. It was rent controlled at just $285 a month!

Was traveling back east when I learned the sad news. (Just got back into town here in Hollywood last Friday). Thanks for posting this, Ray. You mention KPIX Chiller Theater, but surely you must have the same happy memories I do of Zach's first Manhattan venue on ABC's Shock Theater. (Or are you younger than I think you are, wise beyond your years?) Nowadays we think it sacrilege if our favorite films are broadcast in anything less than their original pristine, uninterrupted completeness, but I daresay Zacherley's playing havoc with the Universal monster classics endeared these treasures all the more to us budding monster kids. Humorously narrating the films on weeknights, hilariously inserting himself into the visuals on weekend evenings, impishly leading into the commercials, and of course furthering the advancement of science with his mad lab experiments... Whence comes such another? What a blessing he was to the bloom of our youth.
