Just listening to the remastered Barry Last Valley. Stunning/outstanding work. Highly Recommended from one who treasured the original LP. Sonics are terrific with no extraneous noise.
I'll add to the chorus approving the Quartet release of John Barry's The Last Valley (1971). Having bought the vinyl LP approx. 45 years ago, followed by the Tickertape and Intrada CD releases of that album (as well as the Silva re-recording ...), I know this music pretty well
On my first play-through a few days ago I heard some improvement but it was yesterday when I did a proper A~B listening test of select pieces that I was certain. Each and all revealed better detail and, possibly more importantly, less harshness. Whilst the Intrada release is an improvement, overall, compared with the TT release it does suffer from less-than-perfect sound especially in the high notes and the loud, busy passages. Okay, this new release doesn't sound like a current recording but the harshness is diminished ... and there's far more width/depth to the music.
I thought I had to buy this third CD release because I would always be wondering if it was any better. Now that I have I can say I have no regrets ... I've now deleted the Intrada recording from my NAS.
Have to add my praise as well to Quartet's Last Valley release. If you have previous releases and are thinking about getting this, go for it, the warm and detailed sound with clearly more oomph in the bass end adds greatly to the score's atmosphere and is a very noticeable improvement on previous versions. A great listen.
