Just found out that the POPEYE soundtrack is getting an LP reissue by Varese for Record Store Day. Given that they've already given another Backstreet Records soundtrack its own CD release (NIGHTHAWKS), dare we hope they will follow suit and release POPEYE on CD? This would probably mean no expansion (sad), but it would be better than the alternative.

Peter? Peter?

The new vinyl release apparently includes two instrumental score tracks, but oddly the song "Everything is Food" still is missing. I never understood why this song number was left off the original release and it certainly seems like it should be included in any new expansion.

I would love a CD expansion. Hope this becomes a reality.

Yes that would be good news but only if its mostly score music & not littered with pop songs. & Night-Hawks has had 2 releases already this Varese issue is a 3rd time release.

I wish this 'return to vinyl' fad would hurry up and FUCK BACK OFF!!!
I want POPEYE complete on CD (which would include ALL the underscore AND missing songs).
Let's hope if/when they release this to CD, they include all the missing stuff FFS!!

If this is anything like the version LA-LA LAND was going to release then it will be something awesome. However, expense prevented us from doing so and we dropped the project. We'll just have to see next year if Varese decided to spend the dough or not.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

MV, don't say that!

What if you guys had a set of releases in the "Elite Series" that were more expensive due to cost of the project, or it could be a pre-funded project, with half the funding coming from the customers? I would pay at least $50 for a 2CD of this. Not sure who else would, but damn this soundtrack is glaringly unavailable.

(And otherwise, thanks for at least trying.)

Yes I would have pitched in to help for that project, I love Popeye and with the Nilsson demos out there as well as the missing studio cues, I can only imagine how great of a score that would have been from LaLaLand, this is a real loss!

Ah yes, some of the demos are great. That would be a real shame if they were forgotten.
I hope we will have soon a beautiful edition of that score by one of the greatest american songwriters.

His soundtrack/Song album for the TV cartoon "The point" (which was narrated by Dustin Hoffman), is definitely on my top 5 favourite albums ever.

This is the information provided for the Record Store Day release:

This is the first official vinyl reissue of the Popeye soundtrack, with music and lyrics by Harry Nilsson. The soundtrack features vocals by Robin Williams, Shelly Duvall, and Ray Walston, and this reissue also features two previously unreleased score cues from the film, sourced from original analog stereo master tapes.

Track List
Side One:
1. "I Yam What I Yam" Performed by Robin Williams (Popeye), 2. "He Needs Me" Performed Shelly Duvall (Olive Oyl), 3. "Sweet Pea's Lullaby" Performed by Robin Williams, 4. "Rough House Fight" • Studio Orchestra, 5. "Din' We" Performed Robert Fortier (Bill Barnacle - the Town Drunk), 6. "Sweethaven" Performed by The Citizens of Sweet Haven, 7. "Blow Me Down" Performed by Robin Williams (Popeye)
Side Two:
1. "Sailin'" Performed by Shelly Duvall (Olive Oyl) and Robin Williams (Popeye), 2. "It's Not Easy Being Me" Performed by Ray Walston (Poopdeck Pappy), 3. "He's Large" Performed Shelly Duvall (Olive Oyl), 4. "I'm Mean" Performed by Paul L. Smith (Bluto), 5. "Kids" Performed by Ray Walston (Poopdeck Pappy), 6. "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man" Performed by Robin Williams (Popeye), 7. ""End Title Medley • Studio Orchestra

I guess they don't realize this was originally on vinyl back when the film was released in 1980.

Damn. Doesn't seem to be the version you were working on. Make sure you get in touch with Curtis Armstrong for liner notes if this project ever comes back around for ye.

Here is the program I put together using an excellent digital transfer of my POPEYE LP and the movie (DVD source). The last two tracks I used as "bonus tracks" rather than as intended for part of the altered listening experience. Just wanted to capture them digitally to be able to listen to. I think if I were actually producing this project, the album would be its own thing and the film versions would be mixed in with the score on their own disc. In any case, for better or worse, here's how I listen to POPEYE in lieu of a legit release:

1. Overture (End Titles)*
2. I Yam What I Yam (Album Version)
3. He Needs Me (Album Version)
4. Swee'pea's Lullaby (Album Version)
5. Everything Is Food (Film Version)*
6. Din' We (Album Version)
7. Sweethaven (Album Version)
8. Blow Me Down (Album Version)
9. Sailin' (Album Version)
10. It's Not Easy Being Me (Album Version)
11. He's Large (Album Version)
12. I'm Mean (Album Version)
13. Kids (Album Version)
14. I'm Popeye The Sailor Man (Album Version)
15. I Yam What I Yam (Film Version)*
16. I'm Popeye The Sailor Man (Film Version)*

* not on original album

I basically kept all the album tracks in order, with the film versions set between those tracks. I decided to put the End Titles at the start of the album as an overture. As a second disc, I have all the demos. These were, of course, gotten from the interwebs, but I would gladly purchase a 10-disc set of this soundtrack. It's one of my favourites. It's truly a shame this little film hasn't had a proper commercial release, expanded or otherwise.

I just read on Amazon.com there's a 2-CD Deluxe Edition POPEYE soundtrack by Varese up for Pre-Order. (I just entered "Popeye soundtrack" and it's the 5th one listed.). Release date June 23. I'll definitely be ordering this when it comes out! smile

"Everybody is Food" sounds like it should have been the End Title song for SOYLENT GREEN.

Cue the late great Phil Hartman as Charlton Heston, "PEOPLE, Soylent Green is PEOPLE!
