A New Series from Varèse Sarabande:

VARÈSE 500

Though so many companies are releasing fewer and fewer physical discs these days, we still love CDs at Varèse Sarabande. Even with as many CDs as we are releasing, we realized that we have a large catalog of titles that have been out of print for 10 or 20 years, or even longer! For those who have never had a chance to own some of our wonderful releases from the 1980s or 90s, we have now created a new series just for you!

Varèse 500 will offer special limited editions of just 500 copies of some absolutely wonderful scores that may have otherwise just remained in our archives or solely on digital platforms like iTunes. We have even taken advantage of the opportunity to re master many of these to give them just a little extra shine.

At 500 copies, they don't need to be blockbusters. The series will consist of some very special films and film scores by some of our greatest composers. Scores like Georges Delerue's "Agnes of God", Elmer Bernstein's "The Grifters" and George Fenton's "White Palace" ... maybe you have them already ... but for those who don't, Varèse Sarabande has created Varèse 500, an exceptional new series of film music classics revisited. – Robert Townson

To inaugurate this new series we are so happy to present Georges Delerue's 1985 Academy Award-nominated score for Norman Jewison's AGNES OF GOD. So beautiful, moving and heartfelt, this is one of the composer's most loved scores.

The Varèse 500 release of AGNES OF GOD will be available for ordering on December 12.

Full details on this title will be announced then at the Varèse Sarabande web site.

Hope this collection will include Basil's NO MAN'S LAND. Peter, is it in the plans ?
Besides the remaster, should have been cool to have improved booklets.

Does anyone more knowledgeable than me know if there was much music missing that could have been added as an expansion?

I'm not a big fan of Delerue, but this is one of a small handful of his scores that I do really like, and I do find that 30-minutes is a disappointingly short length for a CD.

Yes... that's the one... not to mention it has been rather quiet on that front...

I am sure I am missing one or two more.... and now this?

Cool it down, who would say no to easy money? I mean, how much work was put into this release? That said, I'm pretty sure the booklet will be the same as the first edition, but I will be glad to be proven otherwise.

That, *and* regular reissues of The Champ, City Heat, Foul Play and others that are going *well* under the radar :-/

Varèse seems like a company in search of a distribution model. It's almost like there A/B*-testing there releases.

* or rather A/B/C/D/E/F-testing.

That said: Agnes of God is a fantastic score that needs to be available, in whatever (HQ) format.

So what's the difference between this series and the Encore series? I think Varese might have finally lost the plot.

Let's hope these aren't brick-walled to death! (Will be passing on the three titles listed so far, mind you, because I already have them).

As I said in the last Varese Box thread, Varese is trying to get as much money out of their stagnate library from falling CD sales. Throwing everything out there before CDs are gone. Releasing them at 500 each there will probably be a one day sell out, well at least on Agnes Of God. Other labels release CDs that are limited to 500 and they are around for awhile. Too bad Varese will not let some of these go, so another label can release them properly. I really think they are scrapping for sales. Let's try this, well that did not work, let's try this, well that didn't work either, okay, let's try this...

Encore is usually 1000... these are 500... that's probably the only difference we know of so far... big grin
We'll have to wait and see if this is the straight reissue with two long tracks or it will be edited into shorter cues and arranged in proper order like encores always are...
"Certainly" slightly different number of copies was "a good enough reason" to launch a new series big grin

Well, it didn't take long for the usual suspects to come out and bitch about Varese as usual... But how is this not a proper release? It's on CD, most likely a jewel case (considering how anal some people are about that sort of thing), contains a booklet. Sounds like a proper release to me.

- Hackman's shitty boxes series

Disrespectful and unnecessary Petr Kocanda.
No need for it.

Peter is a decent, humour, hard working chap as far as I can tell and doesn't need this rubbish.

As you say.....not that anyone cares.

Great Delerue score sought after by many. I personally was lucky enough to lay hands on a copy of the original issue a couple of months ago.
Let's hope Morricone's THE ISLAND will be part of this new series because I missed it when it first came out. The 1000 copies were sold out way too quickly.

I love this score, it's absolutely beautiful which lovely melodies and rich orchestration....

But god the tracklist is really dumb. Hopefully they will fix that....though I assume there won't be anything new.

I know I shouldn't be, but I am stunned at the amount of whining about this release, given how often it's been brought up as a score that Varèse should reissue. What's the problem exactly? You don't like the series name? You don't like other releases in boxes? It's not "proper" somehow? The track titles are no good? Has the ability to enjoy music on CD been so lost that we can no longer just enjoy a terrific score?

Maleficio will correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the album actually contains more music than is in the film. Delerue took the basic score materials and built a concert-like album around them, which is why the track titles are more like suite movements than film cues.

Thanks for the reply, I was beginning to think no-one wanted to talk about the music.

A shame there's not more, but what's available is great.
