Alwyn is fantastic, film or concert work. I grew up listening to his scores to The Crimson Pirate and Swiss Family Robinson. Yavar

Alwyn is a real hero of mine - great music, whether film or concert (and I really recommend his symphonies on the Lyrita label - all great). I also really like his opera of Miss Julie. So of course I will order this right away. That said, I wish it included a suite from The Naked Edge, Gary Cooper's last film, which I know isn't very good but that I like anyway and it was the score that introduced me to Alwyn way back in 1961.

The Chandos film music series is excellent, always enjoy them. One of my favorites is the Stanley Black Film Scores CD. I program out a couple of the lightweight/lighthearted pieces, but what's left is an excellent and dramatic group of scores. Gets regular plays. Just watched an Eyetalian DVD of Jack the Ripper from 1959 - I saw it when it came you but it had the Pete Rugolo replacement score, of course. But this DVD has Black's score, and while it's not as lurid or anachronistic as Rugolo's, it's really good and I was glad it was on the CD.
