Sad news that Greg Lake's death has been announced. I've heard his Christmas song played several times today. Sadly that's E&L we have lost this year...
Color me stunned. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake...gone in the same year.
I'm really, really, really glad I got to see ELP on the Black Moon tour, the first of two nights at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles (the second night was simulcast on KLOS). It was incredible. They were in top form, playing nearly everything I had hoped would make it onto a reunion tour setlist, from "Tarkus" to "Knife Edge" to "C'est La Vie" to "Touch and Go" (from the Emerson, Lake & Powell album). Some songs stood out as "Should've played 'em!" were "Karn Evil 9" and "Trilogy."
Unfortunately, I missed ELP's next round of shows in southern California a few years later.
First encountered ELP when i went to Madame Tussauds when i was about 9. They had a rotating waxwork there with music came on and i had to ask my mum who they were. I never had much exposure to their music over the years but even if someones music doesnt speak to you it still doesnt stop you appreciating that they are talented musicians and important artistes. Rip to an undoubted legend.
RIP Greg Lake. I don't really know his music well, but the 1992 ELP album Black Moon is interesting as it was co-produced by Mark Mancina. Mancina also wrote the great song Burning Bridges for the album:
What a very, very talented bloke. He came along at just the right time for that talent to be appreciated. He played a large role in showing how adventurous and interesting music of the 60's and 70's could be.
