John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, died today (Dec. 8). He was 95.

The former astronaut and U.S. senator was being hospitalized at the Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University in Columbus when he died. In 2014, Glenn suffered a minor stroke, affecting his vision, after undergoing heart-valve replacement surgery.

He was a good family friend. We had a nice conversation at the Marine Corp Museum in Quantico in 2014 (before his stroke); though in his 90s, Senator Glenn was still full of life and vigor--and mentally sharp.

He will be missed as an American hero; he may be missed even more as an everyday American.

I have a friend who got an old large Time magazine with Glenn on the cover, in a plastic holder, that he wanted to get signed. My friend is extremely lazy when it comes getting anything done, unless it's insugnificant shit, so he waited like two decades and sure enough, he's now missed it.

I have wonderful memories of the Mercury missions. We were even allowed to watch some of them on TV at my elementary school.
This was significant and thrilling stuff back then, men being launched into orbit in “space capsules”.
Thank you, John Glenn and “Godspeed”!
