Ok gang ...dive in.
What did you think?

Well, I guess I'll go first.

I thought it was awful. There was no suspense to it (it all played out predictably for me) and more often than not it just bored me. It was well-produced at least, it looked very good, and if you like nudity, you sure had to love it, but I found it narratively to be a tedious mess. You just didn't know what was going on or what anything was about for way too long, and that was the way the writers wanted it because I guess that's how they think it makes the story compelling and mysterious. Well, as far as I'm concerned it doesn't, just baffling, dull, pretentious and ultimately trite. The androids are too human, become sentient, and then turn on the humans. Gee, like I couldn't see that coming.

My verdict on the show.....

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

HBO, just bring back DEADWOOD, you dumb fucks!

I'm up to episode 5. It's okay. Not great. I liked the first half of the first episode the best. The initial twist of the man in black not being a robot. I like the main actors, it's well cast there. Ed Harris and Hopkins are always watchable. The logic within the show has to many cast flaws that I can't get past and just lose myself in it. None of it makes any sense at all. Also the English writer character is just awful, the swearing angry character who is instantly tiresome. There's barely any humans I'm sympathetic towards and yet I also don't really care about the robots as they're robots. I'll finish it as I'm watching with fruends but it's becoming a slog. I'd have bailed after 2 or 3 maybe. I can't recall the music in it other than some nice slow covers of some pop songs. I agree with RoryR about Deadwood.

Well boys, thats interesting. See what joan and kevin and david sones post now the series is over.

Certainly up to mid way i wanted it to get a bit quicker, as there were a lot of bewildering strands and hints but very few answers. As i said in one of the other threads, first four epusodes were like robot groundhog day. but once Thandie newton's robot went dominant mid season it got a lot more watchable. Hopkins, as always, was good and seemed the only man on the show with a few aces up his sleeve. Of course the biggest part was working out who was a robot and who wasnt.
The inevitable finale i thought was a bit wimpy - and the confusion of it all seemed to be designed to make us all feel the same short-circuiting madness that the robots were going through.

As allardyce said, i did like the way djawadi sensitively worked in a bit of a nod towards Karlins gunfighter theme a couple of times, with sawed violin and piano, but overall it didnt thrall me. Nice main theme which got better on each hearing.

It's been discussed quite a bit in work this week, with lots of people venturing their thoughts and opinions.
The one thing that has rung through is...the more you think about it, the more the whole thing collapses under the very thin foundations it's built upon (LOST anyone).
How has the park avoided multiple fatalities and severe injuries throughout the 30 odd years?
While the hosts can't shoot the guests, there are plenty of other ways a guest could get killed or maimed.
I think the park needs to review it's security and failsafe procedures!!!
Just what are the watchers doing, other than staring at CGI mountains and landscapes?
They don't seem to have a clue what's going on where, with whom...when...either in the fantasy land OR within their own complex!!
If Arnold died many years ago, didn't ANYONE see Bernard down the line and think (scratches head) 'wait a minute!!??'
And the two recent female employer murders (Hopkins alluded there had been others over the years). How is that written off/explained to the family/friends/authorities?
I'm all for a suspension of disbelief on shows with fantastical elements, but it HAS to be built on some SOLID foundations and internal logic. Not some 'make it up as we go along' scenario that ultimately killed LOST for me.

Hey Bill, thanks for starting this topic. I can’t really remember all that I wrote on the other side of the board.

The series kept my interest. If I hated it by episode 2 or 3, I would have quit. Why watch something that I don’t like? Yep, there were flaws, but I liked a lot of this show.

Kev brought up two interesting points. Hosts can’t kill people, but at times they slugged humans and hit them hard which surprised me. I know one head honcho woman was killed by Bernard, but what happened to the young lady who was near a stage and dragged off? I don’t remember her or her body being found.

As I said on the other side of the board, I was stunned to find out that William and Ed Harris were the same two people. His narrative with Delores was in the past and in the present. Duped me. At the end, I expected a slaughter, but she only shot a few. Is Ford dead? Is there a robot downloaded with all of Ford’s memories? I know I have to wait until 2018 to see the next episodes. That is a long time for this ancient or mature woman’s memory.

Yep, there was a lot a nudity, maybe gratuitous nudity, but at least for ONCE there was what I call “equal opportunity” nudity. Shows usually have no problems showing women nude. This show showed a lot of naked men too. (And no, I’m not a dirty old lady, but equality is nice. wink)

Thandie newton's naked debriefing every week was a highlight that kept me watching!
There, i said it, and in this sneery pc world im not ashamed. Thandie has taught me im not a robot coz my natural instinct is to letch!! I might even have a t shirt made up! " Lecherous and proud!"

Joan i think there was a bernard flashback that showed him strangling that robot investigator girl. So i assumed she went the way of the other exec woman.

So do we assume westworld may have a few vacancies on its board now??!
I think i might apply. At least i can get the narrative speeded up and also make the storylines less indecipherable!! smile

Well, Letch, I didn't think the female investigator was a robot. She was? (If you have that T shirt made, I hope the police arrest you.wink)

No, i thought she was human, bt ive given up on the are they- arent they guessing game.
We had obvious robots, and disguised robots.
as i said originally, the whole bloody show could be robots, including the scriptwriters, for all we know.
Maybe Ford is still testing the park and the "guests" are robots too?
You and me could be robots Joan?
I know that Kev McGann definitely isnt.
And TG was made extra big to absorb more electricity.
I dont know who else is a robot on here, but i have my suspicions! wink

Finished it. But only as I was watching it with a friend. I checked out really by ep 6. The cast was great and very watchable, it looked great. There were a couple of neat twists in the series. But mostly I just thought it was awful. The writing was terrible. I couldn't believe the world because it hadn't been thought through to a level where anything made sense on any level. Real bullets??!??! It'd take too long for me to get into it too much. I figured Wyatt by ep.7. Didn't care about the maze, didn't care about the robots. Newton going back was ridiculous. The 2 techs helping her made no sense. The next series should just be planet if the apes but with robots hunting humans. I won't be watching it. The nudity felt like it was just there to distract from how bad the writing was or just to copy what was popular in other shows. Samurai World did look ace though! smile didn't notice the music much other than the opening 5 or 6 notes of the theme made me think of some other score. No series 2 for me.

But mostly I just thought it was awful.

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one.

Back when it first started, I got emails from a friend in Scotland asking me how it was and all I could tell him was I thought it a bomb and not worth bothering with.

But in the end it's harrowing. Harrowing because HBO wants six seasons of this crap.

An android of low brow connoisseurship has entered our culture... and shot it in the head.

Well, maybe that thing they've got coming on in a few weeks with Reese Witheringspoons will be good.

Yes, it succeeded at being a fine masturbratory tool. Probably why HBO wants six seasons. They're still showing "Real Sex" episodes from the '90s.

Ahh, shucks, Wanderer. Since you won't be seeing Season 2, how will you appreciate Joan's and Bill's erudition and savvy insights into Season 2? (And you'll miss Bill's lechery and licentious comments too.)
(And what else is there to do in minus 30 degrees? We'll miss you.)

You'll have to pick a soccer team and join the football thread. Bill is witty there on a regular basis! Or he tries! wink

Nope, not going near that thread. I'll stick with the NFL topic.

Sensible girl, that Huey. Actually we only let gold-club members into that thread - and even then their presence comes under the closest scrutiny. Any trolls or irritating people get ignored - or put on it! wink
And thats why nobody replies to my posts.

Further to somebodys point above, i knew something bothered me about the technician's siding with thandie newtons robot. To begin with he feels a certain attraction/admiration and wants to help. But once she starts getting out of control im surprised he doesnt just tell the authorities and have her blasted? Didnt ring true that part.

Good point, Bill. Why didn't that tech tell someone about Thandi's evolution? Maybe it is because he sees her as more human than robotic. I'm not sure.
