If you are at all interested in this score, pick up the Prometheus. It's a fantastic performance, it sounds great, and the additional music helps round out the score in a way the original album — which was more of a “suite” presentation — didn't. It is nice to hear the score build the way that it was written to. And the suite from The Red Pony is sublime.

Can anyone give their opinion of this ? Original soundtrack vs. re record by Tadlow.... Is Tadlow worth getting if I have the original? Both the recording Goldsmith made for the original soundtrack recording and the one conducted by Nic Raine for Prometheus are top notch: well performed and both boost very good sound. (The Goldsmith recording was made in the 1960s but sounds crisp and clear). The Prometheus re-recording contains some very good cues not found on the OST. Fans of the score (as I am) I recommend getting the new Prometheus recording. It is stunning and very much worth seeking out. I do have both and won't part with either, but if I could keep only one, it'd be the Prometheus recording.

I own Tadlow's but came across the Varese release and wanted to ask if it's worthy or may this come as a reissue soon enough? (it is a MGM score) I have no idea if HOUR OF THE GUN is on anyone's release schedule, but the re-recording Goldsmith did, which was released by Varèse Sarabande, is an excellent recording with stellar sound (one of the best sounding Goldsmith recordings from that era). Definitely worth getting if you can find a copy. I love the score a lot and have both the Prometheus and the Varèse, and would not want to part with either.

Anyone know if the isolated channel on the 2017 Twilight Time blu-ray tracked in the music from a cd release, or was it different (longer or shorter, source cues, etc)? It's a completely different recording; the original film recording of the score has never been released on album and is apparently lost (the isolated track is music & effects... and sadly there are a lot of the latter). The original Goldsmith-conducted album was a unique recording with smaller orchestra (like Waxman's Taras Bulba received a few years earlier) and the Nic Raine recording released on Prometheus and produced by Tadlow is the only album which returns to the original larger film orchestrations. Despite featuring reduced orchestrations I do still love the original album under Goldsmith's baton. Yavar

I grew up with the old United Artists LP and love every second of it. Not the film tracks? Rerecorded? Smaller orchestra? It's okay with me.

My pleasure, Last Child. Yeah, as with Taras Bulba, having the original film recording would be the best option if it could ever be discovered. But barring that, it’s still great to have both a complete rerecording using the original orchestrations, PLUS an original album under the composer’s baton. Even though I enjoy the Raine recording and the extra 25 min of music it premieres, there’s something about the original album recorded by Goldsmith that keeps making me return to it despite the reduced orchestra compared with the film. (it is a MGM score) HOUR OF THE GUN was a Mirisch-Kappa Production for The Mirisch Corporation, Released through United Artists. M-G-M had nothing to do with it, until years later when they purchased the UA back-catalogue and slapped their logo on all and every UA film. Both versions of Goldsmith's music are worth having, IMHO. The original for it's vitality, and the later recording for it's extra music.
