I found the DE to be better balanced overall, and there are a lot of gems to be found. I also found that Jaylah's Theme seemed to be more present in this than on the OST, and the suite arrangements are stunning. Now that I've read this, I guess I'll have to dig out the CD for tomorrow's commute ...

I don't think there is really a general market for such a release. It's either Trekkers (who'd buy the 2CD for sure) or film music buffs. How much more outside of this community is going to buy a Star Trek Beyond CD? Not too many. That depends. You would have to ask Peter about the numbers (and I don't know at all about the sequels), but I recall the 2009 Star Trek album doing exceedingly well on iTunes.

As for a lack of liner notes… this is a new score. With very few exceptions, newer scores don't really get much in the way of liner notes. There isn't much to reflect back on, as it was just done earlier the same year (“Ah yes, March… what a young lad was I”). The Deluxe Editions of the 2009 Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness had no liner notes either. Besides, Giacchino has been quite busy these past few months. But Composers don't do the liner notes. Those are generally done buy the Jeff Bond's and Julie Kurgo's of the world. Yeah, I get that new releases don't get the track by track analyses a more vintage score would, but I'd love to know the smaller details, like what the deal is with the second track "Trick or Treaty." It repeats the material at the end of "Logo and Prosper," only in a different key. So, is the first track the film version or not? If you're gonna have a multi page booklet included in the album released for the score/Trek geeks, a little background on the music would be nice. Having said that, as long as I have the album, I'm thrilled. This is a fine score, but I agree that it's the weakest of the three Bad Robot Trek scores. It doesn't quite have the same spark as the first two.

Love this score. Made me cry. Anyway, anyone knows what "Krall-y Krall-y Oxen Free" means? Is it a kind of magic?
