Thanks EDW. I don't cook much either. I read Brits eat Kidney Pie. Bluurrrgh.

Thanks, Jenk. "Mindless Fangirl." Well, if I like it, call me Fanwoman. And with my heightened intellect and my very high triple digit Einstein IQ, they'd be silly and on dangerous ground to call me mindless.

Kidney Pie leaves me speechless. I wonder whose kidney they use. Ugh. Brings to mind mutton and mead. Anything to do with sheep creeps me out.

I love to cook and my son and husband are my cooking companions. My daughter's attempts have been hilarious. She had to go to a party and bring a snack. She decided to make these Oreo critters with frosting and chocolate chips. They were adorable in the picture. When she was done, they looked like they had been exposed to the Chernobyl disaster. Now she brings fruit platters. She has a great sense of humor, thankfully.

No, steak n kidney pie not my cuppa tea.
But apple pie for the club meet, we said. With custard. Or ice cream.
And if firecracker just wants to bring fruit platter, that sounds edible. wink

This movie would've been a lot better if Jyn was baking an apple pie, and Darth Vader was slicing up this turkey of a film.

Rogue One

---I can see why people reacted differently to this movie. People raised on the original 3 Star Wars (like me) may react differently than those raised on prequels. (I want Harrison Ford back. Drat. I know, I saw The Force Awakens.)

---Secondly, I don’t care if people loved it, liked it, felt “meh” about it, disliked it or hated it. Those are opinions, and I won’t write a long dissertation justifying my opinion because it won’t change anyone else’s opinion. Right? And I don't want to change minds.

---Finally, I have VERY strong Mafia ties, especially here and in the U.K. My mom’s name was Dawn Corleone and my dad’s name was Don Corleone, so don’t mess with me!!! wink

Truth. I was rather bored during the first hour. I felt at that time it was a pale and rather soulless Star Wars’ imitation. I found more redemption in the second hour and began to care more for characters and the story. Hence, I’m a wussy fence-straddler because I didn’t care for some it and cared a bit more for other parts of it. I did like the music. “And that’s all I have to say about that.”

(Sorry, Jenks, I am a fanwoman of a lot of movie.)

Young firecracker got to the third paragraph of one missive and said "gee, someone has a high opinion of themselves, huh?" She read no further. smile

I gave no background. She is to the point. Love that about her.

Until the next reincarnation.

Maybe I should start a new thread? "Continuity Errors Of Previous Members".

No need to be sorry, Joan. I'm just glad you got *something* out of the second half and liked Giaccino's score --- assuming, of course, you're not just being kind and diplomatic to spare us "Rogue One" fans' feelings. wink

I liked the second half and had problems with the first half of the film as well, so you're not alone in that. I felt too many characters and locations were introduced in a brief period, making it confusing early on. I also thought Cassian (the rebel captain) and Bodhi (the Imperial pilot defector) were too similar-looking and dressed too alike, also leading to confusion for me on first viewing.

So, we all have our "Rogue One" problems to work out. smile

Rogue fans have feelings? smile

Nah, I was being very honest. I'm only diplomatic and kind towards our rather disabled (mentally) Bill. Pitiful characters bring out my kinder side most of the time.

I only spare the feelings for anyone under the age of 14. Fortunately no one met that threshold since our youngest member was 15. big grin

Guilty, but with an explanation, Your Honor.
You see, I'm merely yet another dreg coughed up by our deeply flawed public education system.
And that's all I can really say.

Just saw it yesterday and thought it was pretty decent. I liked a lot of it and had a few issues with some of it but it was a fairly solid film. The characters were underwritten - Forest Whittaker was very underused - so it was up to the actors to use their actorizing abilities. I like Riz Ahmed so was hoping he'd get through it. The ending felt very big, much bigger than I was expecting. I was hoping more a Where Eagles Dare type deal (I'd heard it was a bit war filmish). Couldn't remember any character names really, lots seemed to be said very quickly. Just Bodhi, Cassian?, and Jynn? And Galen Erso but the rest flew past me. Rather like Donnie Yen and his buddy and K3SO?.

CGI Cushing was better than I expected but still distractingly not good. The top lip seems to be a problem for these CGI characters. Should have got Ralph Fiennes and aged him in make up. The Carrie Fisher looked like a plastic cartoon. Didn't mind the end Vader scene .

The overall look was good, liked the costumes and sets, locations. I'd be happy to see Star Wars films not about characters from the original trilogy. It's actually a pretty small universe it seems. But then you have films that "aren't Star Wars" or "fan service". They're sort of stuck, but in a good making billions of dollars kind of way.

It'd be intersting to see the original version of this film.

Another continuity error. Vader's epic balls to the walls battle at the end of the film. He personally took out the Blockade Rebels guards. (half of them I anyway, some escaped)

But in the beginning of A New Hope he takes a back seat and lets the Stormtroopers who can't shoot straight take over the ship and boards when the battle is at hand. Why didn't he lead the charge the second time around? He's clearly better than 50 Stormtroopers combined. I know the reason, because they needed some Vader fan service in Rogue One.

It appears to me that Edwards suffered a Rick McCallum moment in this case (or rather we suffered from Edwards' Rick McCallum moment).

In watching "Star Wars" directly after "Rogue One," it also seems that Vader has suffered a severe diminishment of his lightsaber and force skills in the hours following his solo massacre aboard the rebel flagship, as evidenced in his duel with Kenobi. Perhaps he spent too long standing in the vacuum of space, in the open docking bay watching the blockade runner escape. His cape does look nice blowing around.

Seriously, this scene bothered me because it was one of the things that fell short in a film that I in many ways enjoyed. I actually liked this more than "The Force Awakens" and went to see it twice in the theater. I thought it brought back a lot of the feel of the original trilogy that has been missing for many years.

The appearance of C3PO and R2D2 seemed misplaced to me. Them being aboard the blockade runner or appearing earlier in the film would have made more sense. Only one ship receiving the transmission after the gate had failed seemed odd too. There were at least a few larger ships nearby that made it into hyperspace just before Vader arrived. Also how did Vader's crew know that the rebel flagship was the only ship that received the transmission? At the beginning of SW, Vader pursuing the blockade runner only on suspicion rather than certainty creates a better impression of the cruelty of Vader and the Empire in my mind.

Consider if these were being viewed in order for the first time. What if "Rogue One" ended without ever revealing to the audience that anyone received the transmission of the Death Star plans? Perhaps with Vader or Tarkin being informed that Imperial forces in the XYZ quadrant detected a ship that might have been in a position to receive the transmission from Scarif. Then through the course of "Star Wars" we learn that the blockade runner actually did receive the transmission. I think it could have made both movies stronger if it were done right.

As for the original post, ANH doesn't take place "5 minutes" after this one. We have no idea precisely how much time passed between the corvette jumping into hyperspace and Vader finally tracking it down again.

I've seen this argument elsewhere, and the problem I see with it is the assumption that the blockade runner (corvette) is just waiting around for Vader to arrive. If Vader's Star Destroyer hadn't pursued in a relatively immediate fashion, then Leia should have at least had time to make contact with Kenobi on Tatooine, if not retrieve him and proceed on to Alderaan.
