Just wondered if anyone had any opinions on the work of Arkady Strugatsky & Boris Strugatsky - Roadside Picnic, which i think got turned into the film STALKER and Hard to Be A God, which has been adapted twice, neither of which i've seen but i like the look of the recent adapation. I bought both books but have yet to crack them open.

I read the recent publication of the new translation of 'Roadside Picnic'. It's more a mood piece than A to B to C narrative. As that goes it was very good, and I recommend it.

I've not read any of these, so thanks for the reminder. Many are on kindle, which for me is de rigueur for enjoying science fiction properly. wink

Just remembered that I have wanted for a while to thank you, Wanderer, for starting this thread, and Adm. Naismith (or should I say Miles) for mentioning the book. I read Roadside Picnic in January, and it was by far one of the best sf novels I can recall reading over way too many decades. Somehow I had missed them even though I'm pretty widely read in the genre. My wife is enjoying it now.

I've got some other books I'm working on now, but my next choice of theirs is likely to be The Dead Mountaineer's Inn: One More Last Rite for the Detective Genre.

Nice one, Sean. I've yet to read them. Started and it was good but got sidetracked. Currently reading noir stuff instead. But will get to Roadside picnic after SS-GB.

Sidetracked? How do you get sidetracked?

Just kidding, the better question for me is how do I NOT get sidetracked! wink Happens all the time.

I read SS-GB many years ago - that's a good one, but I remember the feel more than the plot now. Always have enjoyed Len Deighton.

I have so many books it's insane and they're all over the map topic-wise. My general interests change constantly it seems. Never read any Deighton so looking forward to it and then the Russian lads.
