"...and obviously Terry Rawlings and Ridley Scott found parts of Goldsmith's work outdated even in 1979 and tossed those pieces"
---------------------
And dug up some of his more 'up-to-date' music from a 1962 movie he did to fill some gaps!! wink

Jed Kurzel is an unknown composer to me.. i haven't heard of him before, i've only just checked out Macbeth, i was quite impressed with the music/score, its quite moody, medieval style, Good composer.

I will listen to Covenant.. & some of his other scores.

"Sails" is a pretty good cue. I've been listening to this a lot lately. "Cargo Lift" is also a really cool action cue.

Having listened to it on YouTube just once, I get where you're coming from Jon. I also listened to Goldsmith's POTA and can only marvel at his inventive and lyrical score for the film. How does Alien compare with POTA? Well, POTA comes off in better shape IMHO. Alien is no less inventive, it's just POTA has a surprising amount of musical feel to it in spite of the intensely wacky surroundings of the scenes. There it is - it's the difference between the way things were done in the late 60s as opposed to now. POTA has a predominantly higher ratio of music instead of noise - now it's noise with islets of music. Or, something like that anyway.

Loving this new score. Love the fact that its not all the usual horror 'stingers' music. His sustained build ups in tracks like 'Med bay' is brilliant and i love how he's skillfully worked in the Goldsmith stuff, not just bludgeoned it in somewhere.
Saw the film last night and, as a big Ridley Scott fan i was really sorry to find i thought it was crap. For me it made PROMETHEUS seem good.. It was that bad! Dumb, dumb, dumb plotting and stupid character decisions wiped out even the thrill of seeing the great Alien design again. And that shows me how much i love the score because even seeing this pile of dross hasn't put me off the great music.

I find the score enjoyable for what it is – a mashup of others’ work with a little bit of original material mixed in. It’s just like much of today’s music, especially hip-hop, etc., with “lifting” and all. There’s Goldsmith’s and Goldenthal’s music for Alien, some Outland (Goldsmith), and some of JNH’s Goldsmith-lite score for The Fugitive in a mostly good blend.
I saw the film this past Saturday and I was a little unsure as to how I felt about the score as it and the movie unfolded. I was thinking “This is how the original Alien should have sounded back in ’79.” as the opening credits went by. I was unsure as to whether to feel relieved and gratified to finally hear Goldsmith’s music in the theater or to feel patronized as if it was Scott’s way of saying “Right, here’s your bloody Goldmith music! Enjoy, and sod off about it!” I fully realize it was his film and he could do with the score whatever he wished just as he could with the cast, crew, etc.
Anyway, a likeable enough score, but one I probably won’t buy, unless it becomes available on download for $2.99 on Amazon.

I share your love of the Med Bay cue. "Cargo Lift" "Spores" and "Dead Civilization" have been playing here pretty much non-stop. I'm sorry you didn't like the film. I've been to see it three times now. I would actually rate it a little higher than Prometheus (which I also loved)
The most interesting aspect for me was the robinson crusoe-cum-mad robot scientist in outer space angle. And I thought the ending was superb. I only hope it does enough business overseas to warrant just one more sequel continuing the David 8 story. I know that I'm in the minority on that though.

I just wanna know one thing.
Is the Goldsmith ALIEN theme played wrong deliberately, or is it just a sign of the times?

Not sure what you mean by "wrong"
The score is a hybrid, so it's not going to sound exactly the same - that's the point.

I haven't picked this up yet but plan to - I loved the film and the score.

So much potential for the next two films as I think they've mentioned there are two more planned.

Would be neat to see if it picks up when they arrive, or if it shows the next group of travellers coming to investigate the new colony lured in by reports from Walter wink.

Well that makes two of us!
I'd be happy with just one more. Scott has said in interviews that it would be similar to "War of the Worlds"

I soooo wanted to like the film. Enjoyed the start, liked the characters but i just thought the actions of them as the film went on became ridiculous ( Billy Crudup.....come on!!!!) ending in a sequence that made Tom Cruise hanging onto a speeding train or plane from Mission Impossible seem perfectly logical in comparrison.
And this is coming from a bloke that loves Japanese Godzilla films so my standards arent't exactly stellar!
As i said though, the score made the whole film worth it for me. Its great hearing a modern horror score that actually takes you on the musical journey and keeps you involved without resorting to quick build ups and stingers ever 2 minutes!
