Peter McNicol (star of Dragonslayer) has good and wide ranging taste in film music. Good interview and he was very forthcoming on what he admires. Years ago I was working at ILM and Matthew Robbins, director of Dragonslayer, came into our dept. and we talked over lunch. He did not like North's score to his film, and I tried to point out how distinct it was and different from what John Williams would have done, the composer he wanted. He wouldn't hear of it, but North's Dragonslayer remains one of the great fantasy scores of all time and perhaps his final epic score. Years before that I had recommended Alex North to Philip Kaufman who was looking for someone for The Right Stuff. He ended up hiring John Barry, a choice I hated, but then Kaufman fired him after a short time, ending up with Bill Conti at the last minute. I always wondered what North could have brought to that film, but Conti created a marvelous main theme that remains one of the most inspirational pieces of music for film, sometimes played by marching bands at sports events. And an Oscar winner as well.

I agree with MacNicol. It was never one of my favorite Alex North scores. It contains a lot of his trademark sounds of that "mysteriouso twinkling" quality, somewhat heard in his scores of SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN, THE WORD and CLEOPATRA for the vision of Caesar's Assassination and perhaps THE PENITENT and THE PASSOVER PLOT. Even SHANKS I think.

So low and dissonant in nature. It probably worked well in the film, as it was nominated for a Best Score Oscar for North. I much rather prefer North's more lyrical, exuberant and triumphant works like BITE THE BULLET, THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE, SPARTACUS and CLEOPATRA and the latter two's beautiful Love Themes.

Your opinion. Mine differs. I think it's terrific and works well with the imagery. A lot of Norths music called attention to itself and this score is no different. It wasn't a kiddie movie and got the score it needed. Not necessarily an easy listening experience but a memorable one.

Interesting read about Peter MacNichol and his interest in film scores.

It would be fun if FSM could interview more actors who share our love of film scores. I do know at least 2 other actors who love film music.

Sean Astin is a fan of film scores (in general) and Jerry Goldsmith (in particular). I have met Mr. Astin two times and both of them he spoke highly about Jerry Goldsmith. Then we have Michael Winslow (Larvell Jones in the Police Academy movies) who told me that he is a huge fan of Star Trek television scores.

I imagine a lot of actors appreciate film music, whether vocal about it or not. It's the one element that they didn't anticipate once they see the completed movie.
