And he's not dead, thank god as far as I know and hope.

Funny how I feel these types of posts always now require this initial reassurance.

And so I'd have to say my fave Ron Howard film is APOLLO 13 and I would also name James Horner's Superb score for that film as my favorite score for a Ron Howard film.

Listening to a BACKDRAFT Suite right now and I will have to say that I found that film quite enjoyable and entertaining and it's Hans Zimmer Score quite wonderful and perfect for the film.

Please share your faves! Thank you.

Willow and Apollo 13 - solid films and their scores continue to be my favorites by Horner. Ron Howard really pushed him, it seems, to write some of his best scores. Can't wait for an expanded, remastered Apollo 13.

Apollo 13, Cocoon and Willow.

Would love Ron Howard to have stuck with James Horner. I know he said recently that he had wanted to work with him again.

If you can understand Norwegian, I did this special episode on Ron Howard films and film scores a couple of months ago (covering the entirety of his feature film career):

My favourite film is probably a toss-up between APOLLO 13 and BACKDRAFT. If put a gun to my head, maybe APOLLO 13.

My favourite film score is FAR & AWAY, but a LOT of great 'contenders' following immediately after (WILLOW, APOLLO 13, BACKDRAFT, THE DA VINCI CODE).

Favorite Film:

It's a toss-up right now between "Apollo 13" and "Eight Days A Week" (which is still very fresh in my mind).

Favorite Score:

Well, off the top of my head, I guess "Apollo 13". Man, we need a decent CD of that!

This is terrible news! My condolences to his wife Cheryl, his daughters Bryce Dallas and Rebel Alley, his brother Clint, his father Rance and the rest of the extended Howard family. Screw you, 2016!

But his untimely death aside, my favorite movies that he made are probably GUNG HO and PARENTHOOD.

I like the bigger Hollywood blockbusters he made in the 90s just fine, but they all felt a little "empty' to me... well made and competently executed, but lacking in a lot of personality and heart. If you look at his wildly diverse credits on IMBD, it's hard to kind of figure out what might motivate him as a filmmaker... I think he wants (wanted?) to be successful and to make many different kinds of films well. He does, I suppose, but the majority of them seem to be a little light on soul.

As for the scores, he and Horner did some great work together (COCOON, WILLOW, APOLLO 13, et al) and it's hard not to think of those when you think of his great film music. I also like the two scores he has done with Thomas Newman (GUNG HO, CINDERELLA MAN), Randy's PARENTHOOD. Some of the Zimmer stuff has been great, FROST/NIXON in particular.

But this is all taking away from the main point which is that a man has died here. It's callous to limit our discussion to film music at a time like this. RIP, Opie Cunningham.

Film - The Missing

Score - Willow

The Film because of the genre and the peculiar deviant style.

The Score because it was (and still is) able to carry me away.

John's post above: masterpiece.

(Oh, and I'm going with "Willow" for both.)

.. well made and competently executed, but lacking in a lot of personality and heart.

Well, the common remark that Ron Howard movies lacks personnality, that he's no Capra or something...
Well, may be, but I would absolutely not say that they lack heart imho. In fact, a welcome constant in his fimmography is that (the Dan Brown crap aside), they deal with what looks real people that we feel strong empathy for and identify with - Splash, Cocoon, Parenthood, The paper, and even bigger than life stories like Apollo 13 or Frost/Nixon etc..

Anyway, when looking at his filmography, you realize that you don't find that often a director with such a constant track record of well made films, particularly in the 80s/90s and even now - "Rush" for example certainly deserved better. And with good scores!

Favorite movie : PARENTHOOD

Favorite score: Williams marvelous FAR AND AWAY - with a few early Horner scores probably not far behind, and I liked also the R. and T. Newman scores

Film: Willow (childhood nostalgia - shoot me)
