You need to play the volumes a bit high than the other normal recordings. And in a digital sound this really amplifies the sonics to a higher degree. Thor said this in a recent discussion that to him these albums are demo material. He is quite right. I think the sound quality is great on all three cds. You surely can't listen to the first and third and then claim that the first has great sound quality. Yes, they all sound great. Sure, the loudness of the first two albums are lower than the really hot third album but the first two have great dynamic range and the volume issue is easily adjusted by turning up the volume on your sound system. Louder doesn't mean better. This has nothing to do with volume for me. The first volume always sounded distant and a little "harsh" on the brass for me (for example, I always preferred the 1941 March from the Philips "I request" album). The second volume had much more spaciousness, sounded outstanding and was demo material indeed. The third one is even better, it feels closer to being in the room. Musically this is great album. The changes and new arrangements are great and very much in line with the previous albums. The sound quality alone would be enough to make you have it even if there was nothing new in the arrangements. And there are a lot of new arrangements. From the beautiful "Marion's theme", to expansions of "A new beginning"", Catch me if you can (a great, definitive recording), "Lincoln" and many others. I am even getting used to the new "Hymn to the fallen" - actually always thought the piece could be shortened, even if the segue is a little rushed at first, I am getting used to it. In all accounts, a great release, bring on the next one in a few years with the missing bits and the future scores!
