TUESDAY, JANUARY 10 STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII---USA TODAY interviewed director/writer Rian Johnson. "Remember that Star Wars: The Force Awakens cliffhanger with new heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) bringing Jedi master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) his old lightsaber on a remote intergalactic island? Writer/director Rian Johnson is picking up right where they left off in the beginning of the Star Wars saga’s still-untitled next chapter. “I don’t want to skip ahead two years,” Johnson says. “I want to see the very next moment of what happens.” How Rey and Luke relate to each other is the key relationship in Episode VIII, and Johnson says “a large part of the movie” will be spent addressing why Luke’s there and what he’ll do next. Like Luke, Rey has been pulled into a bigger world by connecting with the Force, “but part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson adds. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.” Another cliffhanger: How General Leia might figure in the film in light of Carrie Fisher’s death last month." MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND---Tom Hardy said he's receptive to returning for the rumored THE WASTELAND sequel, “Yeah I believe so! I don’t know when that starts, but I believe that’s in the books. There’s a couple of those floating around. I’m waiting for the call to come. It was so good, man.” TWIN PEAKS---the Showtime 18-episode sequel series premiers on May 21. Showtime renewed THE AFFAIR for Season 4. STRANGER THINGS---Shannon Purser commented on rumors that Barb is returning for Season 2, "No, she’s not alive!" BLACK PANTHER---Phylicia Rashad (THE COSBY SHOW) has reportedly joined the movie cast in an undisclosed role. JJ ABRAMS REMAKES---Abrams says he's finished with remakes, “You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid. In fact, even WESTWORLD...is one of them. But I don’t feel any desire to do that again. I feel like I’ve done enough of that that I’m more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot. I do think that if you’re telling a story that is not moving anything forward, not introducing anything that’s relevant, that’s not creating a new mythology or an extension of it, then a complete remake of something feels like a mistake.” HANNIBAL---Hugh Dancy commented on the possible return of the series, “My feeling is that, knock on wood, if it came around again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for it to be four or five years later. That might actually be kind of interesting. How weird would that be, on a personal level, to find yourself back with those people? ‘So… where did we leave off? It’s such a strange idea, but it’s potentially very healthy for a story like that. So we’ll see.” THE LOST BOYS---Rob Thomas (VERONICA MARS) commented on his CW tv series based on the 1987 vampire movie, "The story that I’m trying to tell in season 1 of THE LOST BOYS is a story about two brothers and how tempted they are to fall in with these vampires and how tempted they are to want to be 22 forever. I am leaning into the Peter Pan notion of, if you join these vampires, you never have to grow up. Your life can be fun and you can attack life each day you’re immortal, and how appealing is that? I read a bit about what the original writer’s intentions were, and how a lot of that Peter Pan imagery got pulled away from what they ended up doing. I’m pushing it back in there."

I'd rebut that as a director, despite his gift for casting, most of his films could be read as fanfic in the sense that the extent of his understanding of the range of human emotion and experience seems to have come from other Hollywood movies rather than from life. His flicks are often fun entertainments but they're more reflections of other movies than reflections of the human condition. Maybe he'll be able to grow past that and put his technical skills in service of something a little more interesting but I'm not holding my breath. I'd say that's the writer's fault still, but I agree, he's not inherently talented in rising beyond poor dialogue or motivation. Full disclosure, I absolutely loved the 2009 Star Trek reboot. That was the most entertaining, rousing, and straight up fun movie I'd seen in a while. (And Andy Dursin of the aisle seat agreed, giving it ****). The two sequels each got worse, sadly. I also loved Star Wars 7, despite the flaws. It's derivative plot is its weakness, but the new characters are so winning, and the action so good, and the music so beautiful, and the chemistry between Han and Leia so gorgeous, and the ending so hauntingly timeless that I can't help but love that movie. So I like JJ Abrams more than others, but he has a lot of weaknesses. I'd love to see him work with a good writer like my personal favorites, Chris McQuarrie and Steve Moffat.

Fanficiton would be a step up from the slop that hack shovels out. You do realize he's generally a director, not a writer? If you're going to call anyone a hack, it should be the people who write his movies. He's just a director, and he has undeniable style, panache, and instinct for directing actors. Even if you don't like the story and dialogue of the 2009 Star Trek, the sleek style, perfectly played dialogue, and artful effects show that JJ Abrams is certainly a talented director. Almost all he does are remakes which don't come near the excellence of the originals. So his films are "fanfics". The term is used more broadly here. (Would you prefer fan-films?) But to make you happy, yes he is a hack.

If you're not talented enough to "make", what's left? Remake. Many talented directors have done remakes. But ironically, J.J. Abrams actually hasn't done a single remake. Star Trek was another timeline, tying in at times with the original series. You might call this a "soft reboot". But not a remake. Star Trek: Into Darkness payed homage to Wrath of Khan, but was certainly not a remake. Star Wars 7, while containing many elements similar to "A New Hope", is a sequel, not a remake. So, actually, J.J. Abrams has not done one remake!
