... I get the impression the series sold very well right up to the last LP, so why did the big shots stop the series? ........

I have no idea but generally speaking the 70ies were a high inflation period, so perhaps they were getting the impression that production costs - especially having a large orchestra - were spiraling out of control?

Maybe Chandos will give us a Max Steiner CD?

THE HANGING TREE, hint, hint!

I would definitely buy a new recording of a complete THE HANGING TREE by any label.

As I've written earlier, a Chandos recording devoted to Max Steiner would be welcome!
But I hope, if it will ever happen, for new material and not another issue with the GWTW or Casablanca suites...
Beside a "Max Steiner Western Film Scores" suites cd, there are many Bette Davis or Film Noir titles never recorded or only available in very short suites. Max Steiner composed so many landmark film scores that it's really hard to select "the best" ones...

Thanks for the encouraging words Ray. There are some of us still out there who appreciate your efforts. I will take a Max Steiner CD from any source. I think your CDs taken from the old acetate discs sound just fine, in fact amazing considering the age of the discs. Don't know if THE HANGING TREE will ever be possible but keep an eye on it! smile

I don't recall if it has been confirmed whether on not there is a large stack of Warner Bros. or other studio Max Steiner tracks that survive beyond the composer acetates.

"The Big Sleep" and "Mildred Pierce" appear to be a possible never to happen no go but perhaps a later project like "The Hanging Tree" has surviving discs of some sort?

I would love to see many Max Steiner scores on CD, but the one at the top of my list is THE HANGING TREE. Hopefully someone can work out the legalities between Warner Brothers and the Gary Cooper estate to get this later Max Steiner score released. SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN is another one I would like to see on CD. I believe Ray Faiola has told us unfortunately that only about 19 minutes of SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN still exists.

A few people on this board have said WB has Steiner tracks from about 1953 to 1965. Some Steiner scores are there, some are not. I think Ray said a long time ago that THE HANGING TREE is there. I wish WB was easier to deal with. I'm still hoping we will see a few more Steiner from BYU, Intrada, LLL, Varese etc.
